Blasphemy case closed after death of accused Christian Mukhtar Masih

Lahore: November 22, 2017. (PCP) The Final Hearing of Mukhtar Masih was on 20th of November 2017, when the Honorable Additional Judge Saadat Rasool took the death certificate of Mukhtar Masih and closed his case of Blasphemy that was pending in His honorable court for trial. The Bail was granted to Mukhtar Masih when The Voice filed a Bail application in the Court of Ms. Munaza Shabir Abbasi on 29th -04-2017 after the Challan/Police investigation was submitted before the Honorable court on 29th-04-2017. The arguments were heard and recorded by the Court on 04-05-2017, and finally the bail was granted after two hearings on 16th May 2017.

Mukhtar Masih a 69 years old man held accused of Blasphemy charges under sections 295-A and 298 PPC upon property matters. The SHO of the relevant police station Cantt Gujaranwala named Gohar Abbas was the Complainant of this case himself which is very unusual and rare act of the Police. On 28th of January at about 9:30pm the Police attacked the house of Mukhtar Masih while everyone at his home were sleeping, they started beating the door relentlessly and broke the door. They went inside the house while everyone was awake. The police asked about Mukhtar Masih, when he came out of his room the police caught him and slapped him gravely. The police also caught Anjum the elder son of Mukhtar Masih and tortured him as well in front of Mukhtar Masih just to pressurize him to accept the charges against him. Previously they did not told them anything and took them in the sitting room of the Local counsellor named Mehr Latif. There were some other people present in the room. The police present both father and son in front of them and they decided and agreed that they are the accused. The people present in the sitting room of Mehr Latif were Qari Shahbaz, Muhammad Anwar, Tariq Hussain, Muhammad Mansha, Dr. Mushtaq Masih, Aftab Bhatti and Muhammad Ashraf among many others whom Anjum Mukhtar couldn’t recognize. They all agreed upon the same story of Blasphemy and let the police take both Anjum and Mukhtar to the police station. In the police station the police threatened Mukhtar Masih to accept his charge against him otherwise the family and son of Mukhtar will be in big trouble and they also assured him that the police is very much able to do the encounters of people who comes in the charges of Blasphemy. After two days the police released Anjum while they sent Mukhtar Masih to the Jail for the judicial investigation.

Mukhtar and his family’s sufferings started from the time when the Blasphemy case was registered against Mukhtar, after his arrest his family went in hiding and stood at The Voice’s safe house and stood there until Mukhtar’s Bail application was finalized and he was granted bail. After that they had to shift (relocate) to Abbotabad about 7-8 hours drive away from Lahore due to life threats to Mukhtar Masih and his family with the help and support of The Voice Society. Mukhtar got very sick there and was hospitalized. He was suffering from his sickness as well as from the trauma of the fake case and it’s consequences. He knew that he will never be able to go back to his home. This feeling made his life even sick. We know how difficult it is to re-locate or leave your home for the security reasons with a knowledge that you won’t be able to go back. After suffering for few months, Mukhtar finally left this world leaving behind his two sons, two daughter in laws, one daughter and five grand -children in his family. Everyone expects his life to be calm and peaceful in the elderly time of life but Mukhtar had to suffer a lot due to this allegation of Blasphemy and the pity is that he was totally innocent and the people who were alleging him of blasphemy did not knew reality themselves. Mukhtar Masih lost his battle for life on November 2nd 2017 in Bagh hospital Abbotabad and was also buried there instead of being buried in one’s own soil.

There are many people who dies in the jails awaiting Justice but even after there deaths Justice is not served. Although Mukhtar did not died in the jail but he was waiting for the Justice, he was waiting to go back to his home peacefully. He was awaiting peace. Please pray for his soul so that God give him peace.
