G M Syed Memorial Awards 2017 Announced


HOUSTON, TX: March 7, 2018. (PCP) Two Sindhi luminaries, Dr. Hyder Lashari of Sindh and Mr. Baseer Naveed of Sindh, were conferred with the prestigious G. M. Syed Memorial Awards 2017 in recognition of their contributions to “Sindhi identity, language and culture, and to the movement for the rights of Sindhis.
The G. M. Syed Memorial Awards are conferred to those whose work with dedication to honor the memory of Mr. Syed, a visionary leader who pioneered the Sindhi freedom movement and was a beacon of the Sindhi people's struggle for national self-determination. Previous recipients include renowned Sindhi luminaries: Keerat Babani of Mumbai, India, Ibrahim Joyo of Jamshoro, Sindh, Pakistan, Dr. Motilal Jotwani of Delhi, India, Sobho Gianchandani of Larkano, Sindh, Azad Qazi of Karachi, Sindh, Mohan Gehani of Dubai, UAE, Kahdim Soomro of Sindh, Dr. Ghanshyam Parkash of India, Dr. Safdar Sarki of USA, Sunder Agnani of India, Abdul Wahid Areesar of Sindh, Khaki Joyo of Sindh, Professor Baldev Matlani of Mumbai, India, Dr. Charles Graves of Switzerland, Naz Sanai of Saan, Sindh, Professor M. K. For the year 2017, the committee announced two luminaries (i) Dr. Hyder Lashari of Sindh and (ii) Mr. Baseer Naveed, also of Sindh.
Dr. Hyder Lashari, a medical doctor by profession, is one of the most leading figures of the Jeay Sindh Movement advocating the freedom of Sindhi Nation and campaigning for the Sindhi Rights. Since 1980, at the age of 16, he started his affiliation with G M Syed and for years remained on prominent leadership positions of Jeay Sindh Movement creating intellectual culture inside the party by establishing study-circles and arranging political training sessions for the Sindhi youths through seminars, workshops, and by publishing articles, magazines, websites and books. In 2008, he founded the G M Syed Studies Board with the objective of promoting Syed’s message of freedom, democracy, justice, religious tolerance, peace, and non-violence. Dr. Lashari is a prolific writer and has written 9 books, more than 100 articles and conducted more than 500 lectures Dr.Lashari has also presented his papers in several International Conferences in UK, USA, and Afghanistan. During military rule in the 1980s, he was persecuted and put behind bars for an entire year. During the same period, his father was also arrested and imprisoned which led to an international cry for his release. Amnesty International recognized Mr. Lashari as the prisoner of conscience. Currently, Dr. Lashari is living in exile in New York USA where he is engaged in writing about Syed’s life and Sindh’s freedom.
The G. M. Syed Memorial Award is bestowed on Dr. Hyder Lashari, “in appreciation for his struggle and advocacy for democracy, civil rights and freedom for Sindhi peoples and to recognize his literary and grass-roots work on Sindh and G M Syed.”
Mr. Baseer Naveed is a journalist a writer and an ardent human rights defender, who worked at the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC)/Asian Legal Resource Centre
(ALRC) in Hong Kong from 2016-2018. After obtaining the Master’s in Philosophy from the University of Karachi, Mr. Naveed started to work as a journalist and a broadcaster. His activism began many years earlier when he started the student movement against the Ayub regime in 1968, leading to the end of the Ayub government. Every government from Ayub to Musharraf has arrested Mr. Naveed. During Yahya Khan Marshal Law, he was sentenced by the military court and tried on sedition charges. However, he was not convicted. In early 2000, Mr. Naveed coordinated a movement for the resettlement of 300,000 displaced persons from the Lyari Express Way during the Musharraf regime. However, in 2004, his son was assassinated, leading him to join AHRC in 2016. In 1971 he received the Bangladesh Award for supporting the independence movement. He is also the recipient of the COHRE Housing Rights Defender Award and the ASHOKA Fellow Award. Mr. Naveed has written two books and published numerous articles in a variety of newspapers and magazines. Mr. Naveed has been prominent campaigner of peace among Sindhi and Urdu speaking citizens of Sindh and has been a vocal and rational voice highlighting the plights of Sindhis, Balochs, Hindus and other religious minorities and advocating on behalf of the victims of enforced disappearances and extra-judicial killings and forced conversions. Along with his human rights advocacy, Mr. Naveed’s commitment to participation in journalism organizations continues as he is an office bearer for PFUJ, KIUJ, and APNEC.
The G. M. Syed Memorial Award is bestowed on Mr. Baseer Naveed “in appreciation for his activism at the International forums and bringing the plight of Sindhis and other Oppressed Nations around the world and for promoting the peace and conflict-resolution in Sindh.”
The G. M. Syed Memorial Committee is a Houston, TX-based educational group organized to promote G. M. Syed's message of non-violence, democracy, secularism and the right to self-determination for Sindhis and other oppressed nations within the international community.
