Dr.Immamudin Shahbaz was born in Zafarwal. Sialkot Dist in 1845 of a staunch Shiah family. An intelligent boy, he pursued Truth. While studying in Hunter School he went to church and at times read the Bible. He accepted Christ as a teenager. He later took part in a debate in Agra with a Muslim friend and some missionaries, after reading Inzam Ul Haqq. He married Khairunissa, a Kashmiri. One night they were forced to flee their home with their baby daughter Bashirunissa, taking along just a Pashmina shawl in case they needed money. He later pastored a church in Sialkote. He was also President of the local and District board of the town. He encouraged new converts to earn their own living rather than live in the mission compounds. He gifted sewing machines to women and adopted boys whom he educated. They in turn got jobs in public and Govt institutions. Being a gifted poet and a musician he versified the Psalms from Hebrew into Punjabi verse, setting them to folk melodies with the help of a musician Radhakishen, pastor Sadiq Masih, and two missionaries, Ms. Martin and Ms. Gordan. He was invited to Tarkio College in Missouri in 1905 and was conferred a Doctorate in recognition of his work. Later in spite of losing his eyesight he continued to write and compose. In 1921 he died at Shahpur. Present at his funeral were Christian and non-Christian friends who loved and respected him. A memorial hall named after him stands in Sialkote today, a tribute to Dr. I.D ..Shahbaz servant of the Lord Jesus. This information has been compiled by facts from the internet, from his only daughter Bashirunissa as told to her daughter Azizulnissa who told it to her daughter Dr. Shama Singh, the writer of this article.
