World Heritage Mohen-jo-Daro walls in danger

LARKANA: February 3, 2013. (Nazir Siyal) As many as the portions of 30 walls of world heritage Mohen-Jo-Daro are near to damage due to the continued mild to moderate rainfall since last night here in Larkana and other parts of province on Sunday. All parts of DK area, Vat-Sun area, Munir Area, and major portions of different 30 walls were identified weak foundations and specified under threats of monsoon rains and other environmental vandalism. For this objective to protect the archaeological sites of Mohen-Jo-Daro and its walls with a heavy budget by the concerned department, which is failed to preserve and protect the historical archaeological sites, the authorities continued their work on the walls and sites of Mohen-Jo-Daro, even prohibited in the manual work during the winter season and months of October to March, because of under water level and salinity as told in the Master Plan for Rehabilitation and Cultural & Tourism (MPR& CT). 24 hours, mild to moderate rain lashes all the parts Sindh province, particularly in Larkana, heavily damaged Mohen-Jo-Daro sites and 30 walls were already identified to protect protect and preserve them. About 2 weeks back some portions of walls at DK area, VS area and other parts at the ancient sites of Mohen-Jo-Daro were damaged due to substandard work and corruption in the budget told the sources. When contacted Deputy Director of the concerned project about his continued work in a present season and inquired about the ban according to manual work in winter season and why the budget was not finished during the month of June 2012, on this, he threatened journalists and also registered NCs against them and alleged for demolishing some portions of DK area and VS area told Abdul Haque to this scribe. He also told that the Director Sindh Culture and Tourism Department Qasim Ali Qasim inKarachi also told that during the winter season according to manual the work is prohibited he confirmed. According to experts as in Archaeology and Manual Conservation Work, there is prohibited any kind of work on the sites during September to March, the project Master Plan for Rehabilitation and Cultural & Tourism (MPR& CT) was designed with a cost of Rs. 3.5 million in 2006 and later it was increased with a cost Rs. 59 million up to 2012 year. It is also pertinent to be mentioned here that there is no salt water tests and mud water tests by the laboratories regarding the conservation work on Moen-Jo-Daro, the pointing of walls and under filling of the sites and development work on Museum up-gradation could be observed with Halla bricks, but the ancient site of Moen Jo Daro should be preserve in its original shape and historical once as demanded. The District Historical Society Larkana should seriously take this issue before the authorities concerned and save the great heritage site of Indus Civilization and properly completion of work renovation and refurnished the archaeological site of Mohenjo Daro.
