Christians protest through out Pakistan against Muslim mob attack in Lahore

Islamabad: March 9, 2013. The Christians of Karachi, Lahore, Sarghoda, Multan and Islamabad came on streets to protest as news spread of Muslim extremists attack on Joseph Colony Lahore and electronic media covered live broadcasting of images of burning of Christian homes. The youth of Christian colony Essa Nagri of Karachi blocked Shah Suleman road and burnt tyres where police opened fire and tear gas shells to disperse crown. The Christian of Korangi and FC Area of Karachi also blocked roads and lodged strong protests against Punjab government on not protecting life and property of Christians in Lahore. According to freelance journalist, Shamim Masih reports that Christians of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, on receiving the news regarding Badami Bagh tragic incident, cancelled all their engagements and immediately convened an emergent meeting about this incident. Later, Christians’ human rights activists, member civil society staged a protest at National Press Club, Islamabad. They were holding banners and shout slogans against on the attack on the poor Christians of Joseph Colony, Lahore. Basharat Khokhar, a human rights activist said that the ugly fact is that the blasphemy law is an enabler of mob violence against vulnerable groups. As long as such laws remain on the books and the authorities remain unwilling or unable to rein in mobs playing judge, jury and executioner, Pakistan will remain plagued by abuse in the name of religion, he added. Samuel Yaqoob urged the Punjab Government to investigate and prosecute as appropriate campaigns of intimidation, threats, and violence against Christian and other vulnerable groups. The protests of Christians were reported from city of Multan and Sarghoda which peacefully dispersed after lodging protests. In Lahore, the Catholic Bishop of Lahore Diocese alongwith Catholic clergy reached Lahore Press Club and recorded protest and urged Punjab government to arrest culprits. Mr. Aslam Sohtra of Masiha Millat Party, Mr. Joseph Francis of Christian National Party and Chief of CLAAS and other leaders reached in procession to Joseph Colony Lahore to express their solidarity with victims of Muslim mob attack.
