Karachi: April 4, 2013. (PCP) Different Pakistani Christian political orgnizations and Civil Society Activists have strongly condemned Muslim mob attack on Christian residential Francis Colony in Gujranwala.
Mr. Mushtaq Gill Adocate Chief Coordinator of LEAD and President of Pakistan Christian Congress PCC Lahore, in a statement from Lahore have condemned attack on Christians and urged Punjab government to adopt necessary security arrangements of life and property of Christians.
Mr. Samson Salamat, Director of the Centre for Human Rights Education, a human rights organization, working against religious intolerance and extremism prevailing in the Pakistani society has strongly condemned the attack at Francisabad Colony- Gujranwala, and has termed the situation very alarming in terms of the safety and security of the religious minorities and demanded that the Punjab Government should seriously concentrate to stop these atrocities. Mr. Samson Salamat further said that vulnerability of the Religious minorities, particularly of the Christian Community is increasing day by day due to the growing level of intolerance in the society and this intolerance cannot be controlled unless a clear policy is not made to eliminate the mindset which is promoting hatred amongst the citizens.
“The Christian Community had not yet come out of the trauma caused by the Joseph Colony attack in Lahore and now this latest attack in Gujranwala shows the reality that how easily they may be attacked” the statement added.
The Francisabad (the colony which has been attacked) is one of the largest Christian Settlement in District Gujranwala, with a population of approximately 2000 families. According to the initial findings, Today (Wednesday, April 3, 2013) a violent mob attacked a Christian Colony, damaging shops, houses and vehicles belonging to the local Christians following a clash between the youths of the two communities the previous night, as a group of Christian boys was snubbed by a local cleric for playing music on their cell phones while passing by a mosque the last evening.
Although the boys turned off the music reportedly but the local cleric raised a rumor and accused the boys of showing disrespect to Islam and the Muslim Community was instigated for the attack.
The International Christian Voice Canada (ICV) based in Canada have strongly condemn another attack on Christian colony in Gujranwala, Pakistan; we hereby share with deep sorrow that the weaker judicial system provides an opportunity to these culprits to victimize the innocent Christian citizens of Pakistan. It is further demanded that the care-taker government should take immediate steps to ensure safety of Christians in Francis Colony; and also take steps to enhance social harmony.
The security of Christian community in Pakistan is getting worse day by day. We want to raise this question with our sincere friends, officials of government of Pakistan, and international community that in order to improve the situation in Pakistan, the judicial system should be strengthened and more security should be provided to lawyers and judges so that speedy trials of such incidents should brought the culprits to justice.
Mr. Anjum Bhatti President of Christian League of Pakistan in Philadelphia have also condemned attack on Francis Colony Christians.
