Transgender participation as Candidates in Elections is step forward

Multan: May 6, 2013. (PCP) A delegation of Centre for Human Rights Education- Pakistan today (on May 6, 2013) called on Haji Saeed Nargis, Candidate for the National Assembly Constituency NA 151- Multan and appreciated Haji Nargis for contesting in the upcoming elections. The delegation consisted of Mr. Samson Salamat (Director of CHRE), Mr. Adhu Ram (General Secretary of CHRE), Mr. Naeem Haroon (Program Coordinator of CHRE) and Rana Irfan-ul-Islam (Alumni of CHRE). National Assembly Constituency 151- Multan mostly consists of rural areas of Multan. Haji Saeed Nargis (Guru of the Transgenders (Khwajsara) Community in South Punjab) and is contesting the elections for the first time. The other contestants include Mr. Qadir Gillani of Pakistan People’s Party (Son of former President Mr. Yousuf Raza Gillani), Mr. Sikandar Hayyat Bossan of Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (former Federal Minister) Talking to Haji Saeed Nargis at this occasion, CHRE’s Director Mr. Samson Salamat said that “it is very encouraging for Pakistan’s democracy that members of the transgenders community are contesting on provincial and national assembly seats from different areas including Multan, Sargodha, Jehlum, Sukkur, Karachi etc. which is a milestone in the history of Pakistan. We always encourage the participation of the members of the transgenders community as candidates and voters because democracy cannot flourish without the effective participation of the marginalized communities”. Mr. Samson Salamat further said that “transgenders community is a neglected section of the society which needs special attention of the state institutions, political parties, civil society and media for their uplift and empowerment”. Haji Saeed Nargis at this occasion said that the use of money in the election has almost make impossible for the people from the marginalized communities to take part in the elections as candidates, therefore the use of huge money by the candidates needs to be checked by the Election Commission and serious and concrete measures are required in this regard. Haji Nargis alleged that the opponents in the constituency are continuously threating the supporters through different ways and means and pressurizing to withdraw from the candidacy. Haji Nargis further complained that despite the ample threats no security has been provided by the government. The delegation at this occasion expressed its concerns on the incidents of violence during the election campaign demanded that the caretaker government, Election Commission and other state institution should ensure safety and security to all candidates without any discrimination.
