Faisalabad: October 8, 2013. (PCP) The government must clearly demonstrate its stance and approach towards dealing with extremism and terrorist elements, this was emphasized by the participants at a meeting of Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) under the banner of the Association of Women for Awareness and Motivation (AWAM) held at Faisalabad on September 28, 2013. Speaking on the occasion, the director of the ASDP, Amina Zaman said, “Terrorism has become incurable disease, therefore it is useless to negotiate with the terrorists having no respect for human beings. Therefore, terrorists must only be dealt with the sincere military action, and must be brought to justice for targeting innocent people.” The project director of the AWAM, Naseem Anthony said, "The climate of peace only prevails where people from different communities and cultures live together without harming each other, and lasts mental disturbance to weaker groups particularly religious and sectarian minorities." A political activist, Arif Ayaz said, “The terrorists have no belief, they spread terror and fear indiscriminately regardless of any specific group. The states come into being for ensuring peace, freedoms and protection for citizens, but it is pity that states are also involved in terrorism by proving backing support to them.” The executive director of the AWAM, Nazia Sardar said, “The media must respect the dignity of victims of the suicide attacks by not exploiting them in media-rating and point scoring wars. They must neither display body parts nor reporting the incident using negative ways and terms.” A human rights activist, Iftikhar Ahmad said, “The extremism has adverse effects on the social harmony. It paves way for discrimination and prejudice among various communities. The atrocities and oppression will not end unless victims start resisting against oppressors.” The director of the AWARD, Christina Peter said, “The frequent incidents against minorities prove that the government has failed to protect the settlements and worship places of minority community, therefore a mechanism must be instituted to prevent such attacks, and build bridges among people from different communities.” “The attack on Church in Peshawar has occurred for lack of security and indifference of the government towards protecting minority groups. Even the media has showed reluctance over reporting exact figures of people who lost their lives,” she added. A human rights activist, Shafiq Sharif said, “Targeting religious places and peaceful people especially worshippers is a shameful act of terrorists, therefore, citizens along with the government must be watchful from nefarious elements hatching conspiracy to disturb peace and harmony in Pakistan.” A political activist, Robin Daniel said, “The human rights defenders have to engage influential community leaders for resolving the conflicts arising among communities peacefully before it escalates, so that peace environment of the community does not disrupt due to any misunderstanding.”
