Millions of vaccine in Sindh destroys due to disconnection of electricity against non-payment of dues
LARKANA: December 16, 2013. (Nazir Siyal) Provincial Health Department at various locations in Sindh could not maintain cold chain, which resulted millions of rupees vaccine destroyed due failures of electricity since week particularly in the home town of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. WAPDA disconnected electricity of Health office against Rs. 5 million outstanding told reliable sources.
According to reports, the administration failed to pay outstanding/dues of HESCO/SEPCO, which resulted electricity of District health office and other health centers, have been disconnected in Larkana and other parts of province.
The sources told this scribe that there are about Rs. 5 million dues against health department, while several other locations are reported disconnection of electricity, the disconnection of electricity was reported since a week, which resulted millions of important vaccines among Hepatitis, ARV and may be polio vaccines destroyed due to failures of cold chain maintenance.
Over a week disconnection of electricity the qualities of vaccine have been doubtful and may be destroyed that could not be confirmed after various calls and contacts the authorities.
According to the sources, the “Cold chain” refers to process used to maintain optimal conditions during the transport, storage, and handling of vaccines, starting at the manufacturer and ending with the administration of the vaccine to the client.
It is also pertinent to be mentioned here that the optimum temperature for refrigerated vaccines is between +2°C and +8°C. For frozen vaccines the optimum temperature is -15°C or lower said according to the precautionary measures.
But unfortunately, many times, witnessed the failures of vaccines during polio campaign during over 50°C in Larkana, Jacobabad, Kamber-Shahdadadkot, Sukkur, Khairpur, Ghotki, Dadu and other parts of country.
When, this scribe contacted the authorities over the mobile phones were not attended by the media on different occasions.
