Islamabad: February 12, 2014. (Faryad Anayat) A man arrested by the Kohsar Police in a theft case allegedly committed suicide in the police station by hanging himself with his ‘azarband’ (waistband) in the washroom on Tuesday. Inspector General of Police (Islamabad) Sikandar Hayat, when contacted for his comments, said: “A criminal case will be registered against the responsible officials if the post-mortem report confirmed torture.” He said that CCTV cameras would be installed in lockups and washrooms of all police stations to check such incidents in future. The enraged members of the Christian community gathered outside the Kohsar Police Station to stage a protest against police. Former federal minister Julius Salik reached the scene and tackled the situation. Later, police high-ups reached the scene and assured the demonstrators that the police personnel, reportedly responsible for the death of the inmate, would be reprimanded. According to police, an FIR was registered with the Kohsar Police Station against Sabir Masih, 24, son of Gulzar Masih, resident of a slum in Sector F-6/2, on February 5 in a theft case. The police spokesman said that police obtained a three-day physical remand for further investigation and kept him in the lock-up. Police claimed that the suspect was not tortured by police during the course of investigation, while the family members of the accused, quoting the deceased, insisted that he was tortured by the people investigators. On Tuesday morning, the suspect went to the washroom of the police station, but didn’t return despite passage of about two hours. Later, police found him hanging with ‘azarband’ (waistband) in the washroom. His dead body was shifted to the Federal Government Services Hospital (Polyclinic) for post-mortem.
