UNHCR urged to set up Refugee Camps for displaced Pakistani Christians in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Thailand
Karachi: May 1, 2014. (PCP) Dr. Nazir S Bhatti, President of Pakistan Christian Congress PCC in a letter dated April 30, 2014, to Commissioner United Nation Human Right Commissioner for Refugee in Switzerland have urged to set up refugee camps for thousands of persecuted Pakistani Christians in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Thailand who are facing boarding and lodging difficulties with their children.
“Pakistani Christians are not economic or self-designed persecuted migrants like Muslims of Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Syria and Burma who are dealt according to mandate of UNHCR and their cases are decided within months while Pakistani Christians who are truly persecuted in Islamic Republic of Pakistan are asked to wait for decision on their cases from 2-5 years” wrote Nazir Bhatti
Dr. Nazir Bhatti added “UNHCR is providing lodging and boarding facilities to Muslim registered refugees and making arrangements for education of their children but Pakistani Christians are denied all such benefits”
Pakistan Christian Congress Chief Dr. Nazir S Bhatti have brought situation of persecuted Pakistani Christians who have registered them with UNHCR offices in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Thailand in notice of The Commissioner of United Nations Human Right Council in Geneva and appealed to handle their cases in true spirit of Human Rights as enshrined in Charter of UN Universal Human Rights.
“It is surprising to note that Pakistani Christians are suffering and victim of substandard attitude of UNHCR on denial of their cases after years of waiting when Pakistan is in list of countries where Religious Freedom situation is not satisfactory” said Nazir Bhatti
Only Rescue Christian and WVIP are providing boarding and lodging to Pakistani Christians whom they transfer while thousands of families are fleeing from Pakistan on their own but after long waiting after registration with UNHCR offices they are forced to beg from Churches for food and shelter which is moment of thought for International Red Cross, UNHRC and other International Human Right organizations.
There are more than 10,000 Pakistani Christian men, women and children in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong and Singapore who fled from Islamic Republic of Pakistan after rising violence against them, cases of blasphemy, bombing in Churches, life threats by extremist Muslims, harassment by police and lack of adequate security by government of Pakistan to their life and property.
Here under are content of letter of PCC Chief:
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees,
Geneva, Switzerland.
Sub: Establishment of Refugee Camps for displaced Pakistani Christians in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Thailand.
His Excellency,
I, the undersigned Dr. Nazir S Bhatti, President of Pakistan Christian Congress PCC and Editor of Pakistan Christian Post, wish to draw your kind attention towards thousands of Christians displaced from their homes in Islamic Republic of Pakistan after persecution by majority community and government and presently facing hardships in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Thailand after duly registration as Refugee with UNHCR.
I wish to submit that displaced Pakistani Christians are not economic refugee or political refugee like Muslims of Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Syria and Burma to whom UNHCR is providing full facilities under charter of UNHCR while true persecuted Pakistani Christian refugee are totally denied any economic and residential facilities in cities of Colombo, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok which have forced them to beg from Churches and other organization. Is UNHRC a political institution or Human Right institution which only mandates to help Muslims migrants of above mentioned Islamic States who are displaced due to political conflicts in their states not on true persecution?
It is on record that UNHCR issues decision on cases of Muslims refugee applicants within period of months and provides them with camps and financial assistance then why true persecuted Pakistani Christian refugee applicants are given time of interview from 2 to 5 years without any boarding and lodging facilities?
I would invite your attention to take note of substandard attitude of UNHCR offices in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Thailand toward Pakistani Christian Refugee applicants who’s cases are not given due consideration under charter of UNHCR.
The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is among states where religious freedom to minorities is denied to them according to UN and other International organizations reports then responsibility lies on UNHCR to take Pakistani Christians refugee applicants as true persecuted refugees.
I hope, your honor will provide due assistance to displaced Pakistani Christians with facilities of Refugee Camps with provisions of food and education to their children.
Thanks.
Dr. Nazir S Bhatti
