Lahore: May 4, 2014. (PCP) Centre for Human Rights Education- Pakistan, a human rights body working to protect and promote civil liberties including freedom of expression and freedom of Press on the Eve of World Press Freedom Day 2014, has expressed deep concerns over the trends of suppression of media and attacks on the journalists in Pakistan.
Centre for Human Rights Education’s Director Mr. Samson Salamat has urged the government to defend media freedom and ensure the safety and security to the journalists who are under the looming threats from one corner or the other. Mr. Samson Salamat has said that “freedom of expression is a democratic value and is guaranteed by the International Human Rights Standards including the Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the Article 19 of the Constitution of Pakistan, therefore peoples right to freedom of expression and other fundamental freedoms should be protected and respected”.
Mr. Samson Salamat further added that “the Constitutions of Pakistan is the Supreme and guiding document, and therefore all the institutions should fulfill its responsibilities within the limits defined in the country’s Supreme Document.
While applauding the role of Pakistani journalist Mr. Samson Salamat said that Pakistan journalists have contributed significantly in enhancing public support for democratic values and human rights, and therefore the government must do maximum to create an environment where the journalists can continue to work without any fear.
Centre for Human Rights Education- Pakistan on the Eve of World Press Freedom Day demanded the following initiatives:
The government must ensure that all the abuses committed against the journalists are impartially investigated and that appropriate action is taken against the perpetrators while the public is provided with the correct information of the investigations.
The government must also defend Press Freedom as an important component of freedom of Expression guaranteed in the Pakistan’s Constitution and International Human Rights Standards including Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Pakistan has signed and ratified the ICCPR and therefore is duty bound to fullfil its commitments.
