Faisalabad: May 10, 2014. (PCP) Civil Society organizations demand that government to amend the blasphemy laws that have become an lethal weapon for human rights defenders, journalists, and other innocent people therefore the accused persons must be punished, involved in the brutal extra judicial killing of the coordinator for the Punjab office of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), a human rights defender, and a senior advocate Martyred Rashid Rehman Khan, and his two injured lawyer friends, namely Nadeem Pervaz and Afzal. Government should take tangible steps and introduced an accountable mechanism against fundamentalists, who destroyed peace and social harmony by misusing blindly this law and killing the innocent people. This was demanded by the participants assemble in-front of the press club Faisalabad, on 8 May 2014 (Thursday), for an agitation to condemned the brutal killing of Martyr advocate Rashid Rehman Khan.
It is a great loss for the nation of Pakistan, all the human rights defenders grieved and condemned the vicious murder of a great human rights defends. The participants were raising slogans and tied the black ribbons and holding placards of different slogans against the terrorism and misuse of blasphemy laws, demanding peace in the society, protection of human rights activists in solidarity with Martyr Rashid Rehman Khan 's family. This agitation was organized by the Association of Women for Awareness and Motivation (AWAM), and other civil society organizations of Faisalabad. At this juncture, a good number of people from civil society organizations, lawyers, students and individuals joined the agitation to oppose the extremism and target killings of human rights defenders.
Speaking on the depressing occasion, the executive director of AWAM, Nazia Sardar uttered the condolences with Rashid 's family and friends. "She said that martyr Rashid Khan has died but we endorsed his unforgettable services, as he was a great human rights defender, who raised his voice for the protection and promotion of human rights, we will follow him as a leader and a role model. She demanded that the government must take steps against the killers of Rashid Rehman must charged according to the Law of Pakistan."
A political activist, Arif Ayaz said, "Thousands of innocent people have been killed since the blasphemy laws introduced. The assassination of Rashid Rehman and other innocent people in the past has proved the failure of the government to protect the citizens in the country therefore the government must reform the blasphemy law and must make a transparent judicial system and easy access of common people."
The director of the ASDP, Amina Zaman said, "The murder of Rashid Rehman is a question mark to the government's performance, instead of all this, the government is not taking any action except ordering and investigation or condemning such occurrence. Although he had been facing threats for pleading the case of a blasphemy suspect, in this regard Rashid Rehman had submitted an application even though security was not provided to him. There must be an impartial inquiry about Rashid 's murder case, she demanded."
The director of National Minorities Alliance Pakistan (NMAP), Robin Denial said, "Extremist tried to frighten and challenge the power of human rights defenders by killing Rashid Rehman. His blood will bring revolution and many human rights defenders like Rashid Rehman would take birth in the surface of Pakistan, he added."
