Glasgow: June 24, 2014. (PCP) An exhibition of artworks created by children to welcome all visitors and competitors to Glasgow during the Commonwealth Games opens this week.
Global Minorities Alliance (GMA), which fights for the rights of minority communities the world over, held the multicultural art workshop at Wellington Church on Saturday 7 June to create the works. The exhibition will be on display at Glasgow University Memorial Chapel until the end of July.
GMA invited children from all over Glasgow and from all different communities to create artworks with the theme of 'Welcome'. The artworks will be displayed during the Commonwealth Games as a part of Legacy 2014, which aims to deliver lasting change across Scotland.
The Commonwealth Games is going to be a massive event for the city, and it has the following statement as one of its values:
“Ours is an inclusive organisation which epitomises the values of integrity, responsibility and endeavour and in which all our people are valued. We will engage our Games partners in the spirit of trust and openness. We will be passionate in our work, and encourage flair and creativity in all that we do.”
With this in mind, GMA created a space for learning and creativity so that the children could demonstrate these values in practice by creating art together. The crypt at Wellington Church was temporarily turned into an artist's studio for the day, and the children (aged 3-11) were provided with blank canvasses, brightly coloured paints, and 'Welcome' and/or 'Commonwealth' as their themes.
However, what they painted was up to them – their imaginations were left to run wild, and the art on display is the result of that.
With many different nationalities and many different languages being spoken around the table (including Urdu, Korean, French and Gaelic), the children represented a vibrant and diverse Glasgow, and the art they produced shows how proud they are that their city has been chosen to host the Games.
Mr Manassi Bernard, Chief Executive of GMA, said of the workshop:
“The purpose of the art workshop is to create a space for kids from all backgrounds to enjoy the spirit of Commonwealth Games as well to celebrate multiculturalism, unity and the diversity which our great city of Glasgow provides.
“We are thrilled to have kids from all communities and we thank parents, individuals and families who participated in the workshop and made it a success.”
Rebecca Gebauer, co-ordinator of the workshop, said:
“It was a sheer privilege to be able to work with children as their passion for the Commonwealth spirit is really admirable. The artworks the children produced are full of happiness, and we hope that lots of people visit the exhibition to enjoy the beauty, imagination and the 'welcome' message to everyone during the Commonwealth Games.”
And what did the artists have to say about the Commonwealth Games?
"I would tell other children coming to visit Glasgow for the Games that it's a really good city, where the people are friendly,” said Hala, 11, from Knightswood. “I hope they'd enjoy their time here as there are lots of activities like this art project for young people to take part in."
The Global Minorities Alliance 'Welcome' Exhibition is on display at Glasgow University Memorial Chapel, Chapel Corridor (South), West Quadrangle, Main Building Gilmorehill Campus, University of Glasgow, Glasgow G12 8QQ, throughout the Commonwealth Games. It is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 12noon on Saturday.
