Oman has historic connections with Balochistan and the port city of Gwadar once belonged to Oman. Gwadar was given to an Omani prince by the Baloch sovereign the Khan of Kalat two centuries ago. Pakistan purchased back Gwadar from Oman in 1958, but many Baloch say the transfer of Gwadar to Pakistan was illegal as Pakistan was at that time headed by a military coup leader, General Ayub Khan.
Every fourth Omani citizen is an ethnic Baloch. Half of these people still call themselves Baloch and identify themselves with Balochistan.
Oman military has a big chunk of Baloch soldiers and officers most of who support the independence of Balochistan.
