Pakistan: December 26, 2014. (PCP) Professor Anjum James Paul, Chairman Pakistan Minorities Teachers’ Association (PMTA) in a letter, Ref. No. PMTA/24/14, dated December 26, 2014 on the subject ‘National Action Plan and Utmost Need to Remove Extremism from the Present Pakistani Textbooks’ has requested Mr. Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister of Pakistan to order “National Book Foundation, Punjab Textbook Board Lahore, Sindh Textbook Board Jamshoro, Balochistan Textbook Board Quetta and Khyber Pakthtunkhwa Textbook Board Peshawar to remove all sorts of biased literature against the religious minorities because after the announcement of National Action Plan it is needed to take strict action against the printers and publishers because they are considered under the Anti-Terrorism Act crime for publishing such material in the textbooks that promotes hate and extremism.” In the letter Professor Paul further says that there must be implementation on Article 22 (1) of the Constitution of Pakistan 1973 that clearly guarantees, “No person attending any educational institution shall be required to receive religious instruction, or take part in any religious ceremony, or attend religious worship, if such instruction, ceremony or worship relates to a religion other than his own.” In the letter Professor Paul appreciates Prime Minister on the presentation of 20 points National Action Plan presented on December 24, 2014 and emphasized on two points for the eradication of extremism, terrorism and religious persecution. 1. Countering Hate Speech and Extremist Material: The material promoting hate and extremism will be considered crime under Anti-Terrorism Act and strict action would be taken against the printers and publishers who will publish such material. 2. Steps against Religious Persecution: Effective steps would be taken to stop religious persecution. In the letter Professor Paul further says, ‘Pakistan Minorities Teachers’ Association is making efforts to make Pakistan a moderate state through removing extremism and hate literature from the textbooks. In September 2007 PMTA published ‘A White Paper on Education in Pakistan, General Standard of Pakistani Textbooks and Education Policies in Pakistan’ In June 2010 ‘A Review on Textbooks and National Curriculum Recommended By the Ministry Of Education’ in October 2014 three research based documents ‘Biased Pakistani Textbooks’, ‘Article 22 (1) of the Constitution of Pakistan and Pakistani Textbooks’ and ‘General Standard of Pakistani Textbooks’ from grade I to grade XII in different subjects like History, Social Studies, Pakistan Studies, Urdu, English, General Knowledge, Islamic Studies and Ethics of National Book Foundation Islamabad, Punjab Textbook Board Lahore, Sindh Textbook Board Jamshoro, Balochistan Textbook Board Quetta and Khyber Pakthtunkhwa Textbook Board Peshawar. The research identifies extremism, sectarianism, violence and violation of Article 22 (1) of the Constitution of Pakistan 1973 against the religious minorities which indeed falls in the religious persecution. In the letter Professor Anjum James Paul said that PMTA wants to see Pakistan according to the vision of the Father of the Nation Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah who in his presidential address to the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan on August 11, 1947 said, “We are starting in the days when there is no discrimination, no distinction between one community and another, no discrimination between one caste or creed and another. We are starting with this fundamental principle that we are all citizens and equal citizens of one State.” Note: Three research based documents published by PMTA in October 2014 ‘Biased Pakistani Textbooks’, ‘Article 22 (1) of the Constitution of Pakistan and Pakistani Textbooks’ and ‘General Standard of Pakistani Textbooks’ have also been attached with the letter.
