Extremists expressed their fury, enraged that a man could speak out on behalf of besieged minorities living in perpetual fear of discrimination, violence and blasphemy accusations simply on the basis of what they believe. Shahbaz had been vigorously campaigning for the release of imprisoned mother of 5, Asia Bibi, whose plight we also re-visit in this 3rd episode of the Ooberfuse Show.” Hal, instrumentalist for the band, adds : “It is emotionally draining to enter the darkened world of religious persecution. We wrestle hard with the anger such violent atrocities stir up trying to understand them in the light of Jesus’ teaching to love those who persecute us. I doubt if even Shahbaz could have foreseen 4 years ago the intensification of hatred that extremists are visiting upon religious minorities especially now in the Middle East. Four years on, Asia Bibi still languishes in a wretched prison cell on Pakistan’s death row. Her crime is to be proudly Christian in a country that considers her decision ultimately to be a blasphemy.
