LARKANA: April 21, 2015. (Nazir Siyal) Pakistani 140 million girls under 18 will become the mothers expected by 2020, because of daily 39000 early child marriages world over witnessed.
Pirbhat Women Development Organization (PWDO) in collaboration with OXFAM-Novib and Aahung at one day sensitization session with lawyers fraternity here at local hotel.
The women representatives on Tuesday expressed that it is a deplorable situation, when they observe violence and several other issues of underage girls in Pakistan.
Rubina Chandio said that according to reports unearthed by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) stated in that 14.2 million girls below age of 18 year are married mostly early marriages happening in rural areas Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
She said that complications of pregnancy and childbirth are leading the cause of death in young women aged 15 to 19, while girls those marry later and delay pregnancy beyond their adolescence have more chances to stay healthier, better their education and life.
Speaking about new bill about Sindh child marriages restraint bill 2013, she added Sindh government has passed a historic bill for controlling the early child marriages, but government has failed to get bill implemented in provinces, which is still premature marriages before age of 18th are in full swing she told.
Police and district administrations are unaware over the child marriages are under the pressure of local leaders.
She reiterated the need and role of government for to create awareness about controlling early child marriages by implementing Sindh child marriage restraint bill 2013, added that it is very important to implement on new ordinance regarding the new law, contract child marriage is punishable for 3 years, Molvi, parents groom will be held and punished according to law, added Police should change its behavior and serve the masses like public servants.
Rubina Chandio astonished that Police are still unaware about new legislations regarding the early marriages before 18 years, it is very compulsory to enforce the law and implement on it in letter and spirit to avoid the unwanted incidents, several government departments have no knowledge about the charter of human rights, every individual will have to raise voice against the violation of human rights.
On the occasion, other participants highlighted that Judges, lawyers, Police, Ulemas who offering Nikah are being provided training in this regard.
The new law has enhanced age limit of girls to 18 years, underage marriages will be dealt with stern action among groom, parents, bride and Mulana to be sentenced 3 years in prison and fine 45000, added that around 40 percent Pakistani women are reportedly getting married under 18.
The representative of Pirbhat Women Development Society Murad Pandrani, Shanul Khoso and others also spoke in the workshop. A large number of Layers attended the program on the occasion.
