Geneva/Islamabad: June 25, 2015. (PCP) Director General of Arakan Rohingya Union, Dr. Wakar Uddin, has stressed that it is the responsibility of the International Community to put diplomatic pressure on the Government of Myanmar to immediately repatriate the rescued Rohingya victims to their homes and villages, adding that the Myanmar government should return full and equal citizenship rights to Rohingya Muslims by re-instating their ethnic identity.
According to a press statement issued by Pakistan office of Global Rohingya Center, he made these remarks while addressing the delegates from the 57 member states, at the OIC Ambassadorial Special Session, during the 29th Session of UN Human Rights Council, held in Geneva. On the occasion, the United Nations Human Rights Council was acknowledged for providing continuous coverage on the persecution of Rohingya ethnic minority and Rohingya Human Right issues in Myanmar.
Dr. Wakar Uddin, representing the Arakan Rohingya Union which is a non-profit global umbrella organization of different Rohingya organizations worldwide with a mission to seek a political solution to the issues faced by the Rohingya ethnic minority in the Arakan region of Myanmar, specifically addressed the issues of forced verification related to the newly-introduced green card/white card system, anti-Rohingya legislation, and voting rights, and stressed the need for a strong concerted plan that involves the Government of Myanmar in the multi-national rescue operations at the sea. He regretted that hundreds of Myanmar's Rohingya Muslims remain adrift at sea, while calling ongoing discoveries of mass graves of Rohingya migrants in search of shelter as a greatest tragedy for all humanity.
“The international community must join hands with the oppressed Rohingya community in demanding the restatement of their basic human rights; such as freedom of movement, marriage, worship, education, and most importantly right of citizenship,” he concluded, while appealing “Save Rohingya, before it’s too late”.
Meanwhile, a protest demonstration was organized by the Overseas Pakistan Solidarity in London, UK, in which a large number of Pakistanis residing in the UK participated to urge the British Government and the International Community for taking concrete steps to find a peaceful solution to the citizenship and human rights issues of the Rohingya Muslims.
The participants, expressing solidarity with the Burma Muslims, also highlighted the expediency in addressing the current humanitarian crises in Southeast Asia and the need for adequate humanitarian relief supplies in IDP camps.
