Faisalabad: October 2, 2015. (PCP) Government must enforce the Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2010 including private and government sectors. Government must initiate campaigns to enhance awareness of this law. The implementation watch committee must be active and meetings of implementation watch committee should be arranged on regular basis. Government must implement all the pro-women legislation and labor laws in true sense. These demands were made by the participants during the awareness session entitled “Protection against Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace” organized by the Association of Women for Awareness and Motivation (AWAM), implementing the project, “Enhancing Women Workers’ Awareness on their Rights and Labor Laws” under the Gender Equity Program (GEP) of Aurat Foundation (AF) by the support of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) held at Faisalabad on September 22, 2015.
The event was organized to discuss the Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2010 and was to enhance awareness about this law and suggest ways to provide a dignified environment for working women. This event was joined by the employers of factories and brick-kilns, trade unionists and representatives of civil society organizations.
Speaking on the event, HR & admin officer of Sitara Textile Limited Faisalabad, Muhammad Shahid said, “We have 150 women workers at Sitara Textiles. We are providing reliable day care centres, health facilities, marriage and death grants, social security and Employees Old-Age Benefit (EOBI), and free transport facility.” He said, “His organization has tried to facilitate women workers and aims to offer them a stress-free environment.” He said, “A trade union of workers exists there.” “Sexual harassment at the workplace is harmful and destructive for workers and the business. Therefore there is need to establish harassment committees at work places.”
A feminist, Shazia George said, “We are lucky to have the Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2010 but unfortunately this law is not implemented in its true spirit. Most of the women workers are facing harassment at workplaces.” “However, many of them are not aware that how the law offers them security and protection.” “It is imperative to make functional the implementation watch committee under the prevention of sexual harassment at workplace act 2010 in order to ensure the implementation of the said law with letter and spirit. The meetings of implementation watch committee should be arranged on regular basis to stay active,” she suggested.
A trade unionist Arif Ayaz said, “Under this law, it is a responsibility of owners, employers and administrators to establish three-member inquiry committee comprises of one female and two male at all workplaces. The role of committee members should be impartial.” “The code of conduct must be displayed at every workplace.” “The government must monitor those organizations and institution which do not adopt the code of conduct at their workplace, they must be fined with one hundred thousand rupees, to implementing this law,” he enforced.
The brick kiln employer, Abdul Razaq Bajwah said, “There is need to raise awareness and educate women workers on harassment law so women workers defend themselves and to create the workplace free of harassment.”
