Lahore: October 7, 2015. (PCP) On the request of the Punjab Government, a delegation of Church Leadership comprised of Archbishop Sebastian Francis Shaw, Bishop Munawar Rumal Shaw, Fr. Francis Nadeem, Rev. Shahid Miraj, Col Washington Daniel, Fr. Moris Jalal and Fr. Joseph Shehzad, Rev. Emmanuel S. Khokhar met with the Speaker Punjab Rana Mohammed Iqbal and Law Minister Punjab Rana Sanaullah to present their reservations on the Punjab Local Government Ordinance (amended) 2015 which deprives the voters of the minority communities to elect their representatives through their direct vote in the local government system. Minority Members of Punjab Assembly Mr. Shahzad Munshi, Ms. Mary Gill, Mr. Kanji Ram, Mr. Shakeel Marcus and Mr. Zulfiqar Ghauri were also present from the Government side at the occasion. Church Leadership and the Punjab Government representatives presented their point of view on the Punjab Local Government Ordinance, however the Church leadership stood firm on their standpoint and demanded the withdrawal the Ordinance and reiterated that if it is not withdrawn the minority communities shall continue to protest in Punjab and all over Pakistan. Earlier today (7th September) the minorities staged a protest in front of the Punjab Assembly under the stewardship of Archbishop Sebastian Francis Shaw and other religious, social and political leadership of the minority communities. The Church Leadership after the Peaceful Protest was requested by the Punjab Government for a dialogue on the issue of minorities’ representation in the local bodies system.
