Karachi: October 19, 2015. (PCP) Caritas Pakistan Karachi under their Livelihood and Food Security program observed the Global Women’s Climate Justice Day of Action in October 2015 with Women Group of Joshua Garden area of St. Jude’s parish, Karachi. The Awareness session on impact of Climate change on women and role of women to fight against climate change with Plantation of different Fruit trees was organized in this connection.
The Global Women’s Climate Justice Day of Action was an opportunity for women around the world to mobilize and show their resistance to environmental and social degradation, uplift stories about the climate impacts our communities are facing, and demonstrate the many real climate solutions that are just and effective. Women are central to climate solutions, they want to show this as powerfully and colorfully as possible.
The Day of Action has been called by Women Earth & Climate Action Network International in light of the December 2015 United Nations COP21 climate negotiations, where world governments will work to finalize a climate agreement with major implications for global trajectory and the health of people and planet. As a network of women for climate justice, people must stand up and act together to show public officials that the time has come to listen to the people’s call for equitable, immediate, and bold action on climate change.
Ms. Parveen Patras, a Christian woman, core member of Women group shared, "Today we became aware about the impact of Climate change on women and what our role to combat the climate change is. Escalating temperature which we has experienced recent heat wave Karachi due to climate change badly affected my family member's health specially children. Therefore we are gathering in defense of our children, grandchildren, and the generations beyond and planting trees to combat climate change."
Ms. Meena Fiyaz, a Christian woman, who planted trees in front of her home, commented, "We are gathering for uniting in solidarity to grow the global women’s movements for climate action and sustainable solutions. If we plant trees at outside of our home the overall atmosphere of home would remain cool and refreshing. The Trees serve two-way purpose to reduce the air emission, one side they inhale the carbon dioxide and the other side they emit oxygen to offset shortage of oxygen in an environment afflicted by the air pollution. Therefore we need to plant more and more trees in our area, which will be a great blessing for us in future to fight against Climate Change."
Mr. Mansha Noor, executive director Caritas Pakistan Karachi, shared, "Day of Action is an opportunity for women to mobilize and show their resistance efforts, expose false solutions to the climate crisis, demonstrate the many real solutions that are just and equitable, and honor frontline communities. Women are the front victim of the climate tragedy; women in rural Pakistan spend most of their time in doing agricultural activities and collecting water and fuel for their families. Changing weather patterns are constantly affecting agriculture and natural sources including forest and water. As a consequence of these changes, workload and hardship of women has increased manifold."
He concluded his remarks and said that women has key role in climate change and women must involve from top to bottom from policy to action to fight against climate change and Save Mother Earth from Global warming, urgent action is needed to plant more and more trees in our community to save our planet from both human and natural disasters before the problems gets any worse. At the end of Program many women planted different fruit trees at outside of their home as a gesture to combat with climate change.
