Hindu Marriage Bill deferred in National Assembly of Pakistan

Islamabad: September 8, 2016. (PCP) The National Assembly deferred the government bill providing for solemnization of Hindu marriages here today when eight minorities’ members selected by Muslim political parties were present in the House. There are 10 reserved seats for religious minorities in house of 342 seats. The Sindh Assembly became first in Pakistan to pass Hindu Marriage Bill on February 14, 2016, as Hindu community is second largest after Muslims in Sindh province while Christians are on third number. There are 9 reserved seats for religious minorities in Sindh Assembly where all seats are filled by selection from Hindu community and Christians have no representation. Sindh province is ruled by Pakistan Peoples Party which is considered as liberal Democratic Party in Pakistan. Conditions for a marriage to become recognized under the bill have been set and are as follows: A. Parties to the marriage are of 18 years of age or above. B. Parties to marriage are able to give consent. C. At least two witnesses are present at the time of the solemnization and registration of marriage According to the bill, every marriage being solemnized under this act will be registered with the union council/ ward in province of Sindh within 45 days of the solemnization. Prior to this bill in Sindh Assembly, the marriage of Hindu couple was not recognized on which they were facing problems to register with national data base and get identification cards and travelling documents abroad.
