Life of Bishop Dr. Andrew Francis

Bishop Dr. Andrew Francis belonged to a very traditional Catholic family of Mr. and Mrs. Francis. He was born in Adah,Pakistan on 29 November 1946. He received his early education from St. Mary’s Convent school, Adha and later moved to St. Francis High School, Anarkali Lahore. After completion of his matriculation he entered into St. Mary’s Minor Seminary and was promoted to Christ the King seminary in Karachi. On 10 January 1972, he was ordained a priest by His Grace Armando Trinidad, the Archbishop of Lahore. He served as the rector of Sacred Heart Cathedral, Lahore in 1986 and later Parish Priest of St. Anthony's Church, Lahore. He completed his higher education by doing double Masters in Philosophy and Sociology followed by PhD.at Atone de Manila University on October 20, 1984. He was ordained Bishop of Multan in Pakistan 26 February 2000. Archbishop Alessandro D'Errico, apostolic nuncio to Pakistan, and Bishop Anthony Lobo of Islamabad-Rawalpindi presided at the ordination of Bishop Francis at a private chapel of the Lahore archbishop's house. Bishop Francis was the chairman of the National Commission for Inter-religious Dialogue and Ecumenism, National Commission of Sacred Liturgy and National Commission of Catholic Urdu Literature. Also he was a member of Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue - Rome, International Commission for English in the Liturgy, USA and the Minority Committee of the Government of Pakistan. He remained the Chairman of the Center for Legal Aid Assistance and Settlement (CLASS) He was the founder of Charismatic movement in Pakistan with the name SARA GHARANA. On Nov. 9th, 2014 Bishop Andrew Francis was injured in a car accident, suffering a spinal cord injury which made him a wheelchair user. Yet he continued his prayer life with vigor and spirit. Bishop Andrew realizing his position he tendered his resignation. His Holiness Pope Francis accepted the resignation. Bishop Andrew died on 6 June 2017, aged 70 and was buried in the Compound of the Cathedral of the Holy Redeemer, Multan. (Contributed by Fr. Francis Nadeem OFM Cap)
