Targeted Violence and Extrajudicial Killings of Christians in Punjab, Pakistan. Report by Khalid Shahzad
Pakistan: This report serves as an urgent call to action regarding a series of brutal targeted killings and acts of extreme physical violence against the Christian minority in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Over the past 14 days, six Christian individuals have been murdered in various cities. Most alarmingly, the case of 22-year-old Markus Masih from Sargodha highlights a disturbing pattern of torture followed by attempts to frame the death as a suicide.
Key Incidents & Observations:
Targeted Killings: Six members of the Christian community have lost their lives in less than two weeks across Punjab.
The Case of Markus Masih: Markus, a young resident of Sargodha, was subjected to horrific physical torture before his death. Local authorities and influential parties are allegedly attempting to misrepresent this brutal murder as a suicide to protect the perpetrators.
Institutional Silence: Despite the gravity of these crimes, there is a complete blackout in local electronic and print media.
Political Negligence: The Minister for Minority Affairs in Punjab continues to issue statements claiming equal rights, while the elected minority representatives remain silent, failing to advocate for the victims they represent.
Our Demands:
Independent Investigation: We call for an immediate, transparent, and high-level judicial inquiry into the death of Markus Masih and the other five victims.
Protection of Evidence: Ensure that forensic evidence and post-mortem reports are not tampered with by local influential groups.
Accountability: Hold the provincial government and law enforcement agencies accountable for their failure to protect vulnerable religious minorities.
International Pressure: We urge the international community to demand answers from the Government of Pakistan regarding the safety and fundamental rights of its Christian citizens.
Conclusion:
The silence of the state and local human rights bodies is deafening. We request your immediate intervention to investigate these atrocities and ensure that the victims' families receive the justice they deserve.
