TORONTO, ON: International Christian Voice (ICV) hosted a special commemoration of Pakistan’s National Minorities Day, bringing together political leaders, diplomats, legal experts, faith representatives, activists, and members of diverse communities to recognize the contributions of religious minorities to Pakistan and honour the enduring legacy of Martyr Shahbaz Bhatti.

The gathering reflected on the vision expressed by Pakistan’s founder, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, for a nation where all citizens could enjoy equality and religious freedom regardless of faith, caste, colour, or background.

Contributions and Challenges Facing Minorities

Khalif Samuel served as Master of Ceremonies and moderator of the panel discussion., Panelist and legal expert Arman Khan highlighted the historic contributions of Christians to Pakistan’s judiciary, including the distinguished legacy of Justice Alvin Robert Cornelius. He also raised concerns regarding forced conversions, child marriage, and the misuse of laws affecting vulnerable religious minorities, calling for stronger legal and institutional protections.

Milcah Wasti recognized the significant contributions of minority communities to education and healthcare, including the pioneering legacy of Dr. Charles W. Forman, Forman Christian College, and Holy Family Hospital.

Nitasha Bhatti reflected on the political contributions of Christians during the creation of Pakistan and recalled the work of Martyr Shahbaz Bhatti, whose efforts led the Government of Pakistan to officially recognize August 11 as National Minorities Day in 2009.

“We must return to the original vision of a country where everyone is free to practice their faith without fear,” Ms. Bhatti said.

Patrick Menezes, speaking from the audience, called for meaningful political representation for minorities and encouraged the Pakistani diaspora in Canada to remain engaged with policymakers.

Political and Diplomatic Solidarity

Mrs. Sundes Ali Khan, Deputy Consul at the Consulate General of Pakistan in Toronto, encouraged Pakistanis to revisit the principles and values articulated by Quaid-e-Azam and acknowledged the important contributions religious minorities have made to Pakistan.

Federal, provincial, and municipal representatives also joined the commemoration, including Peter Fonseca, MP; Amandeep Sodhi, MP; Amarjeet Gill, MP; Amanjot Sandhu, MPP; Sheref Sabawy, MPP; and Vincent Crisanti, City Councillor.

Together, they reaffirmed their commitment to religious freedom, equality, human dignity, and minority rights, while paying tribute to Shahbaz Bhatti’s courageous struggle for justice. They commended Peter Bhatti, Noel Fernandes, and International Christian Voice for continuing his legacy. A certificate of recognition was also presented to Peter Bhatti for his continued service and advocacy for religious freedom and human rights.

Representatives of the Ahmadiyya Muslim and Sikh communities also shared messages of solidarity. Ashfaq Ahmed emphasized that justice and religious freedom must extend equally to people of every faith, while Jagr Singh highlighted the contributions of Sikhs and the importance of interfaith harmony.

Continuing Shahbaz Bhatti’s Mission

In his closing remarks, Peter Bhatti, Chairman of International Christian Voice, thanked elected officials, diplomats, faith leaders, panelists, community representatives, volunteers, and supporters for standing together in solidarity.

He highlighted the historic contributions of Christians to the creation of Pakistan and called upon the international community to support vulnerable communities while continuing to hold the Government of Pakistan accountable for protecting the constitutional and fundamental rights of religious minorities.

Mr. Bhatti also thanked Mayor Patrick Brown and the City of Brampton for establishing Shahbaz Bhatti Park and recognized the Golden Seniors Club for supporting Shahbaz Bhatti’s legacy.

The commemoration concluded with a renewed call for peace, equality, justice, religious freedom, and respect for all communities.
