LAHORE, Pakistan: Three years after the devastating Jaranwala tragedy, the pain of the affected Christian community remains deeply felt, while the demand for justice continues to grow stronger. On August 16, Christians, church leaders, human rights advocates, and members of civil society gathered to remember the victims, express solidarity with affected families, and peacefully raise their voices for justice.

The Jaranwala tragedy of August 16, 2023, left a profound mark on Pakistan’s Christian community. Christian homes, churches, and places of worship were attacked and set ablaze, while families experienced fear, displacement, loss, and trauma. For many survivors, the passage of three years has not erased the memories of that terrible day.

Among those raising their voice is Pastor Imran Amanat, leader of LEAD Ministries, who has called upon the authorities to ensure that the victims receive complete justice and that the security of Pakistan’s Christian communities is strengthened.

Pastor Amanat has urged the Government of Pakistan, the Punjab government, law-enforcement agencies, and the judiciary to demonstrate through concrete action that every citizen—regardless of religious identity—is entitled to equal protection under the law.

The Christian community’s message is clear: rebuilding homes and churches is important, but rebuilding trust requires justice.

For the families who watched their homes burn and their places of worship being destroyed, the scars are not limited to damaged buildings. Fear, insecurity, and emotional trauma can remain long after the physical destruction has been repaired.

The peaceful demonstrations and commemorative gatherings marking the third anniversary therefore carry a message that goes beyond remembrance. They represent a continuing demand for accountability, protection, dignity, and equal citizenship.

Pastor Imran Amanat has appealed to the authorities to ensure transparent investigations, bring those responsible to justice through due process, protect victims and witnesses, and take effective measures to prevent future attacks against religious minorities.

He has also emphasized that the protection of Christians must not become a temporary concern that receives attention only after violence occurs. The safety of religious minorities must be treated as a continuing responsibility of the state.

Jaranwala has become a painful symbol of the vulnerability experienced by Pakistan’s Christian community. Yet it has also demonstrated the resilience of a community determined to remember, speak out peacefully, and continue seeking justice.

Three years later, the question remains: When will the victims of Jaranwala finally see justice delivered?

Their demand is neither for privilege nor special treatment. It is a demand for what every citizen deserves—security, dignity, equality, and justice under the law.

The passage of time must not become a substitute for justice.
