Meeting Between the Holy See’s Archbishop and Ishaq Dar: Emphasis on Interfaith Dialogue. By Dr. Emanuel Adil Ghouri

Pakistan: Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher of the Holy See is visiting Pakistan to mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and the Holy See. This is the first official visit to Pakistan by a Vatican Secretary. On October 9, 2026, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar welcomed Archbishop Gallagher at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During the meeting, Mr. Dar welcomed Archbishop Gallagher and acknowledged the Holy See's role in promoting peace, interfaith harmony, and dialogue.       The Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of sustained international efforts to promote peace in the region. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening relations between Pakistan and the Holy See and to fostering mutual respect, understanding, and peaceful coexistence among religions. The two leaders underscored the importance of promoting global and regional peace, dialogue, and interfaith harmony.

At the very moment this important meeting was taking place at the Foreign Office—where the significance of interfaith dialogue was being emphasized—a distressing incident occurred in the village of Ghariyal Kalan, Narang Mandi: an enraged mob set fire to Kamran Masih’s home following allegations of blasphemy. Moreover, an atmosphere of such fear, terror, and panic was created that the thirty-five families residing in the settlement fled the village in a state of destitution, seeking a safe haven. Although news of the incident spread rapidly across the country via social media.

Acting promptly, the police arrested Kamran alive, took him into custody, and relocated his family to a safe place; yet, the very religious leaders—such as Maulana Tahir Ashrafi—who are championed by bishops and pastors as icons of interfaith harmony remained oblivious to the gravity of the incident. Are efforts toward interfaith harmony confined merely to five-star hotels in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi, or will any tangible action ever be witnessed? Is it legally justifiable for an enraged mob to burn down Kamran Masih’s home and terrorize thirty-five other families into fleeing the area—all without a police investigation being concluded or guilt being proven in a court of law?   If this constitutes a violation of the law, when and by whom will action be taken against those who take the law into their own hands? Has any legal action ever been taken against those who burned down the homes of Christians, or have the perpetrators of such crimes ever been punished? If that has not happened, then what kind of lesson on interfaith harmony is the honorable Deputy Prime Minister imparting to Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher of the Holy See? Bishop Gallagher is also expected to meet with members of the Catholic community in Pakistan. Will Pakistan’s Catholic bishops apprise Bishop Gallagher of the true situation regarding interfaith harmony and genuine religious freedom in the country, or—like other religious and political leaders—will they gloss over the facts and present a picture of "all is well"?
