International Human Rights day at Center of Peace and Harmony Faisalabad

Faisalabad, Pakistan: December 9, 2008. (Khadijah Shah for PCP) Arooj-e-Mariam Catholic Church organized a seminar "Human Rights Situation in Pakistan" to mark International Human Rights day at Center of Peace and Harmony Faisalabad. The speakers included Fr Nisar Barkat, director NCJP, Haji Akram Ansari MNA, Robin Yameen Superintendent Constabulary Police Punjab, Jabriel Francis, Additional and Session Judge, Mrs. Anjum Safdar MPA, Fr Aftab James Paul, director Commission for Inter Religious Dialogue, Mrs Kristina Peter, chairperson AWARD and Ms Aqsa Kanwal. The Muslim and Christian participants including political workers, lawyers, teachers, students, social workers and representatives of civil society organizations attended the event. Fr Nisar Barkat said, "Betterment in the situation of human rights is possible unless we eradicate different classes and sections in Pakistan". Haji Akram Ansari said, "Justice in the society cannot be prevailed with out ensuring proper implementation upon the existing laws". "It is responsibility of political workers to serve humanity irrespective of differences on the grounds of religion, sect, caste, language, ethnic and color", he added. Robin yameen said, "Such laws should be introduced in Pakistan which guarantees the basic education for every child and punishment for employers appointing minors at work places". Mrs Anjum Safdar said, "Poor parents are compelled to engage their children in working sectors and to sell their children due to bad economic condition so it is the responsibility of the government to offer employment to poor by establishing industries for preventing child labor and begging". Fr Aftab James Paul said, "Government should supply adequate facilities to the educational, technical and health institutions and should provide better jobs opportunities to lessen the poverty rate". Mrs Kristina Peter said, "It is imperative for government to promote human rights by including human rights education as a part of the curriculum and to take effective measures for independence of Judiciary".
