Police and social services have spent over 18 months investigation claims that young Asian men are grooming under age white girls for drugs and prostitution, parents worried about the widespread organized sexual abuse in Keighley, where Pakistani and Bangladeshi families are settled in large numbers have met home secretary David Blunket and urged him to take prompt and strong action.
But Cryer has caused a major stir by blaming the ethnic cultural values of these Asian communities for the problems. She said that young men tied into arranged marriages by their families " I am merely pointing out a fact in saying that all the victims of these terrible crimes are white girls and all the alleged perpetrators are Asian men"
This is she added is a "significant fact" and needs to be addressed. Why do these men feel inclined to abuse young white girls? These young men are caught between two cultures. They are brought up in western society and can see their peers entering into relationships with young women. Many will be promised to bride normally cousins from Pakistan and Bangladesh in an arrange marriage, A clear clash of cultures.
The police have questioned 33 girls and suspect that up to 50 Pakistani and Bangladeshi men are involved. Meanwhile some Muslim leaders have expressed anger at Cryer. She remains unfazed.
