Yet the AICC unit of Gujarat has urged the Modi Government to suspend the officers of Ahmedbad Municipal Corporation who were involved in the demolition of a Christian graveyard near the city. The unit has also demanded that the government arrest the guilty and issue orders to reinstate the Christian graveyard. Plus, the unit threatened to launch a mass agitation, including road blockade from Narol road to the Pirana Treatment Plant, to provoke remedial action. In a press release issued on 8 May 2004, national executive member and joint secretary of the aicc Samson C Christian said Ranipur, situated near by the Pirana Treatment Plant and built in 1862, eight kilometres from Ahmedbad, was shifted to a new site in 1876 to facilitate the functioning of the plant. However the graveyard of the old village continued to be used for funerals of Christian families. Under the instructions of the in-charge officer and additional city engineer DK Begda and deputy city engineer BG Satani, the municipal workers, using tractors and trolleys, tried to demolish the 143-year-old tombs of the graveyard. The aicc filed a complaint against the engineers and workers in Vatva Police Station, which is under the jurisdiction of the Police Commissioner of Ahmedbad. However, thus far no action has been taken against them. Following the report appearing in the press, though, the in-charge deputy commissioner of the engineering department, HN Desai, visited the graveyard and stopped all construction activities. But the graveyard has not been rebuilt so far. Under the leadership of the aicc, a dharna would be held at main front gate of Ahmedbad Municipal Corporation, supported by various non-government organisations, dalit leaders and Muslim leaders on 10 May 2004. A memorandum would also be submitted to the mayor and the commissioner of Ahmedbad Municipal Corporation, protesting against the delay in rebuilding the graveyard.
