ISLAMABAD: Chairman, Council for Islamic Ideology, Dr Khalid Masood has observed that Islamic laws are not God made and are rather men made adding that these can be changed repeatedly.

"Islamic laws and jurisprudence don't exist in the Holy Quran. There are only hints in the Holy Quran and the men derive Islamic laws from them. Such indications can be found in natural laws. This testifies that Islamic laws are not God made and are rather men made. These can be changed repeatedly", he said this while addressing a seminar held here Tuesday under SDPI on " Enactment of Islamic laws between book and tradition, he argued. Dr Khalid stressed that openness and critical thinking have to be developed to reinvigorate the process of Islamic legislation. Council for Islamic Ideology has given up derivative method, he added. In addition to Quran, Sunnah, modern knowledge is being consulted in enactment of Islamic laws. He went on to say that Islamic traditions were not inert things. These are dynamic and keep on flourishing. For the past few years, these have been put into shell and made inert due to prevailing sense of deprivation among the Muslims. There is need to break these shells, he urged. He went on to say that in the early days of Islam, traditionalism was not followed. People raised the questions and efforts were made to find their answers. Every one took part in debate. Traditions always served as derivatives, he told. Late a few scholars brought 'Shaair parasti' in Islam and underlined the need for understanding Islam in the light of Sunnah. Western countries occupation of Islamic world in general and South Asia in particular was one of the major reason which contributed to prevalence of inertia over derivative tradition in Islamic laws, he noted.
