Asian Christians on the Cross of Suffering in the Love of Jesus. By Dr. Emanuel Adil Ghouri

Accepting the Lord Jesus Christ and following His commandments is a difficult and arduous path. Every step of the way is fraught with suffering, persecution, and the fear of death. Although this path is difficult, it leads us to eternal life.

The Lord Jesus Christ had warned the small group of disciples at the beginning that people would hate you because of my name. Even after centuries, this message still rings true today.

There is a warning and comfort for believers that when one follows Christ, opposition and abuse are to be expected. Currently, there are 50 countries in the world where believers in Jesus face suffering and hardship. However, there are ten countries that are considered unsafe for Christians on the World Watch List, including some Asian countries.

My faith is strengthened when I see believers in various countries in Asia suffering for the love of Christ. Here is a brief overview of the situation in various countries.

1- Afghanistan. The Christian population in Afghanistan is very small, undocumented, and largely clandestine, estimated at perhaps (15,000-20,000), with the government not recognizing non-Muslim citizens. In Afghanistan, converting from Islam to another religion is a legal crime, with believers facing a range of consequences. Reports from Afghanistan suggest that Christians and other religious minorities suspected of converting to Christianity face threats of torture, forced conversion, and imprisonment. These religious minorities often operate in secret,

Christians in Afghanistan live in constant fear of being expelled and subjected to brutal punishments. Unfortunately, Christians in Afghanistan live in a place where believing in Jesus can be a death sentence.

2-Iran. Christians, along with other religious minorities are being systematically denied the right to freely practice their religion in the Islamic Republic of Iran.Iran’s repressive government executed more than 900 people in 2024 and “sentenced dozens to death on religiously motivated charges,” according to a March report by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). Iranian courts sentenced 96 Christians in 2024 to a total of 263 years in prison.

These disturbing statistics represent a 38% increase in average sentence length and a six-fold increase in overall sentences compared to 2023. At the end of 2022, at least 17 Christians remained in prison, sentenced to up to 10 years on charges such as “acting against national security” and “propaganda against the government.” Practicing any faith other than Shiite Islam is considered “a threat to the Islamic Republic and its values.

3. India. There are four or five attacks on churches and priests every day in India, and every Sunday this doubles to about ten The Sangh Parivar is a consortium of Hindu extremist organizations that includes the influential paramilitary and strategic group known as the RSS (National Volunteer Association). The BJP, the main political party, and the Bajrang Dal, a violent youth wing Hindutva leaders have called for the killing of Christians in three villages in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh: Bashrampur, Janakpur, and Ganeshpur on March 1, 2025..On June 12, 2024, a Hindutva mob in Chhattisgarh attacked Christian families, threatened them, and gave them a 10-day ultimatum to renounce their religion. On December 27, 2024, members of the Vishwa Hindu Prasad (VHP), a right-wing Hindu militant group, forcibly converted a Christian Dalit man to Hinduism and paraded him in Uttar Pradesh. In June 2023, 500 places of worship were destroyed and over 70,000 people were displaced during clashes in the state of Manipur,

4-Pakistan A key driver of violence in Pakistan, misuse of blasphemy laws disproportionately affects Christians • Between 1987 and 2023, at least 2,449 people were charged with blasphemy, of whom 291 (12%) were Christians, according to the Center for Social Justice (CSJ) In 2024 alone, at least 475 blasphemy cases were registered across Pakistan. The allegations often quickly lead to widespread violence. • Since 1990, at least 65 people have reportedly been killed in Pakistan over claims of blasphemy. 2023 Jaranwala incident where over 26 churches and 80 houses were vandalized and destroyed by a mob Estimates suggest that between 100 and 700 Christian women and girls are victims of forced conversion and marriage every year

5-North Korea . North Korea is the world's "most dangerous place to follow Jesus," where Christians are thrown into prison camps and executed for their faith In an October 2020 white paper, the NGO Database Center for North Korean Human Rights (NKDB) reported 1,411 incidents of religious persecution by the authorities. There were 126 killings and 94 disappearances between 2007 and July 2020, based on reports of defections from the DPRK and other sources.

A 2022 report by the International Bar Association found that Christians in detention centers are consistently subjected to more severe and prolonged torture than non-Christians, citing numerous instances of severe physical abuse and murder.

Europe, America, Canada, Australia and other Christian sovereign states have been blessed by God with countless blessings. They are living their lives in a free Christian environment. Many non-governmental organizations from these countries are active in the field to help struggling Asian Christians.

But it is important that Christian states formulate a policy at the official level to help them.
