Why extrajudicial killings in the name of religion? In Pakistan. By .Emanuel Adil Ghouri

According to reports received regarding the unfortunate incident in Sargodha, Nazr Masih, who is accused of reciting the Holy Quran, is undergoing treatment at a local hospital in a critical condition. The concerned police station had registered a case number 24/435 under Sections A 295 A 295 B against the accused Lazar Masih, who is struggling for life and death, at 7 am on the same day. While a case of terrorism or attempted murder has been registered against those who brutally tortured the accused and burned his house and factory with a delay of 24 hours. This attitude of the police is a clear proof of the importance of the difference between the minority and the majority..

My heart and mind are completely unable to accept that a Christian can commit the crime of insulting the Holy Quran. God forbid, even if someone recklessly dares to commit such an impure act, there is a law under which the accused can be arrested and brought to court for punishment. Yet, without verifying whether the accusation is true or whether the accuser has any personal motives behind it, mobs burn down Christian settlements, demolish churches, and often extrajudicially kill the accused  . Seeing this Sargodha incident reminds me of some other incidents like a few years ago in Kasur, a Christian couple Shama and Shahzad were burned alive after being accused of blasphemy. Now how can it be proven that they were guilty or innocent of this crime or that the sinner was the one who burned two innocent people alive? .I believe that the punishment has not been given to Shama and Shahzad, but to their innocent children who were robbed of their parents and their childhood and are living an orphaned life in the homes of younger relatives.

Similarly, the burning of the body of Parantha Kumar in Sialkot has caused Pakistan's disrepute all over the world. The provocative individuals involved in such incidents do not accomplish any feat for the upliftment of religion, but rather cause the country's disrepute at the international level. When the factory of Lazarus  was being set on fire, some people were busy setting the fire with full enthusiasm, while others were taking out shoes from boxes and searching for their favorite and size. This can clearly indicate the strength of their faith. The blasphemy law is not new. This law existed even when the British were in power in the Indian subcontinent. However, the cases were not as severe as they are today. Only after years would a case be registered. Most of the developed countries in the world today, including the United States and Europe, have blasphemy laws, but the number of cases is negligible, while dozens of blasphemy cases are registered in Pakistan every year. Last year, in 2023, five blasphemy cases were registered in two months in Sargodha alone. If an investigation had been conducted before this unfortunate incident to determine the power behind these cases, perhaps this incident would not have occurred today..Whenever such an incident occurs, the government tries to console Christians, including our political and religious leaders, but no permanent solution is found to the problem, which leads to a new tragedy after some time.

To make the blasphemy and blasphemy law more effective and transparent, it is necessary to add that if the plaintiff in this case fails to prove his charges, he should also be given the same punishment as under these provisions so that no one can resort to it for personal gain. There have been many cases so far in which the prosecution failed to prove the charges, but the accused remained in jail for many years despite being innocent. Not only did they, but their families also suffered greatly.
