The United Nations Commission on Human Rights held sixty-two sessions in Geneva until it was replaced in 2006 by the Human Rights Council (HRC). Th
Echoes of minorities' insecurity in government chambers of Pakistan. By Dr. Emanuel Adil Ghouri
After the extrajudicial killing of more than 105 people by religious fanatics, including many very important and valuable personalities like Governor of Punjab, Suleman Taseer, Bishop John Joseph, Shahbaz Bhatti, Federal Minister and Honorable Judge of the High Court, Arif Iqbal Bhatti, dozens of Christian settlements were burnt down and hundreds of churches were demolished, finally, our politicians suddenly felt a love for religious minorities and realized that minorities are unsafe in Pakistan. Then, immediately, emotional speeches began in the National Assembly, in which Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Information Minister Atta Tarar, and Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal openly supported minorities and expressed their concerns about their safety. Not only this, but a resolution for the protection of minorities was also passed by a majority vote, demanding that the government provide protection to minorities. I want to ask these thoughtful politicians whether the government is not constitutionally responsible for protecting the lives and property of minorities. If so, then it should admit its failure and fulfill its constitutional responsibility. And how embarrassing is it that cabinet members are asking their government for protection of minorities? Isn't the federal cabinet part of the government?
Many of our political minors, self-proclaimed Christian leaders, often from the minority wing of political parties, are proudly highlighting the speeches of their political leaders on social media, showing that our leadership is very concerned about the protection of minorities. In fact, what they have done is not out of concern for the suffering of Pakistani minorities, nor out of concern for their rallies and processions, but simply to please the brave America.Because after the killing of Nazir Masih, an alleged blasphemy accused in Sargodha, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller issued a clear statement that we are looking into this matter seriously. Furthermore, the annual report released by the US State Department's Committee on Religious Affairs and Religious Freedom also expresses concern over the increasing incidents of persecution and injustice against religious minorities in Pakistan Not only this, but delegations of Pakistani Christians in various countries have met with members of the European Union and members of the US Congress and informed them of the situation and events. This is a result of this. If you expect a soft corner for minorities from any party, then it is your delusion. On February 2, 2021, a bill to protect the rights of minorities was presented in the Senate Committee on Religious Affairs, which was rejected by the chairman of the committee, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam leader Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri
The bill clarified that the places of worship, property, inheritance, and lives and property of minorities needed protection.. Even then, Senator Tahir Bizenjo had expressed dissatisfaction over the protection of minorities. Even then, all these parties were present in Parliament, but no majority party supported this bill. On October 14, 2021, a bill was introduced to protect minority girls from forced marriage and religious conversion, which was rejected by 100% of political parties. The tragedy of Jaranawala , where 26 churches were burned in one day, did not make any political party realize the protection of minorities. Although Senator Kamran Michael at the time seemed very active in resolving the matter, his real forum was the Senate, in which he should have submitted a resolution of condemnation and given a requisition for a regular session on it. He could not do so because he needed 17 more senators to call a session, while not a single senator from his party agreed to support him Which can be used to gauge how much their political parties are aware of the protection of minorities. In 2021, Senator Krishna Kumari expressed dissatisfaction over the protection of minorities and demanded legislation. She said that legislation should be enacted against the radical elements active against minorities.
These are the elements that caused around 91 tragedies including the Shanti Nagar Joseph Colony tragedy. The government is not unaware of these elements, but rather is held hostage by them. The seeds of hatred sown by these elements have now become a trunk and a tree, under whose shadow the killers of peace are growing, more powerful than the government. I believe that the protection of minorities cannot be achieved through speeches and resolutions. Therefore, it is necessary to enact formal legislation on this matter and, after enacting legislation, to ensure that the law is enforced. Because many laws already exist, but due to their lack of proper application, the accused are easily acquitted by resorting to suspicion and poor investigation. The release of the accused in various incidents due to lack of proof of guilt is a question mark on the delivery of justice.
