Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir: A Growing Voice Against Repression. By Farooq Ganderbali
Thousands of people in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) have been protesting against Islamabad's rule for more than three weeks, reflecting deep public anger over economic hardship, governance failures, and alleged human rights violations. Protesters have openly questioned Pakistan's control over the region and demanded political rights, accountability, and justice.
The ongoing demonstrations have highlighted serious concerns, including rising inflation, shortages of essential commodities, internet restrictions, and restrictions on the movement of goods. Protest leaders have warned that if the people of PoK continue to face repression and economic suffering, they will intensify their movement until their demands are met. Supporters of the movement have also organised demonstrations abroad, drawing international attention to the situation.
The unrest took a tragic turn when six civilians were reportedly killed after Pakistani security forces opened fire during clashes in Rawalakot. The incident has further fuelled anger among the people of PoK and raised serious questions about the use of force against civilians demanding their democratic and human rights. Members of the PoK diaspora have also sought international intervention to address the deteriorating situation.
From India's constitutional and official position, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is an integral part of the erstwhile princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. Historically, on 22 October 1947, tribal militias backed by Pakistan invaded Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in widespread violence, the loss of innocent lives, and atrocities against civilians. The events of 1947 remain a painful chapter in the history of the region and continue to shape the political discourse surrounding PoK.
The world cannot remain silent when innocent civilians are killed for raising their voices. Allegations of human rights violations, political repression, and excessive use of force in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir deserve international attention and impartial scrutiny. Human rights are universal and must be protected irrespective of geography or political considerations.
For decades, Pakistan-sponsored terrorism has inflicted immense suffering on the people of Jammu and Kashmir, undermining its rich cultural heritage, centuries-old traditions of communal harmony, and the spirit of brotherhood that defines the region. Thousands of innocent lives have been affected by violence, and generations have paid the price of conflict and instability.
Today, many voices emerging from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir are openly expressing their dissatisfaction with Islamabad's policies and demanding dignity, development, and fundamental freedoms. The youth of PoK deserve opportunities for education, employment, peace, and progress—not fear, repression, or violence. Their aspirations should be heard and respected.
The people of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir are raising their voices against economic deprivation, political marginalisation, and state repression. No civilian population should be silenced through violence or denied the opportunity to peacefully express legitimate grievances.
The international community especially United Nations must pay close attention to developments in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and stand for the protection of human rights and civilian lives. The people of the region deserve peace, justice, and the opportunity to live with dignity and security.
