Instead of 100 % tariffs on India bill’ Prez Trump ought to opening 10,000 petrol pumps across India by US Small businesses. By Hem Raj Jain
This refers to “The Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026” passed in US Senate with 86-11 and now heads to the House of Representative and then will go to the POTUS for his signature as reported at https://indianexpress.com/article/world/us-senate-russia-sanctions-bill-100-percent-tariff-india-china-10823146/ .
But in the interest of the USA the POTUS will do well if he Instead of signing this bill start working for opening 10,000 petrol pumps [ at least one in each Tehsil / Taluka / sub-district (may be even 2 or 3 in some) in India] by US Small businesses which is economically tenable and politically desirable as explained below :-
(1)- The USA Should enter into a ‘Free Trade Agreement’ (FTA) with India where both countries will impose nil or minimum tariffs on goods and services from other country and the USA should also make an agreement with India where India will not put any obstacle in the path of US small businesses who would like to open petrol pumps across India.
(2)- Diesel and Petrol for the US - automobiles is being sold at about Rs. 80 per liter at the gas stations of the USA (including in my State of Minnesota). If this diesel and Petrol is taken to India then it will cost Rs 20 for transportation and shipping from the US refineries to the Petrol Pumps in India . Which means the companies / oil refineries of the USA can easily sell petrol and Diesel at the Petrol Pumps of India at Rs 100 per liter which is the rate at which these are presently sold in India. Hence this business model is quite tenable economically.
(3)- If the USA doesn’t have sufficient oil to meet the demand of petrol and diesel of India then the USA can follow the policies of Prez Trump of ‘drill baby drill’. Moreover US refineries can easily get huge amount of oil from Canada for refining if Trump administration stops infuriating Canada by saying that it is a 51st State of the USA. And not to forget the Venezuelan oil under the control and at the disposal of the USA
(4)- If Trump administration works for providing easy loan to small US businesses then they can easily open these 10,000 petrol pumps in India . One petrol pump can be opened in $ 2 hundred thousand hence 10,000 petrol pumps will need only $ 2 billion which is almost negligible amount for the financial capacity of the USA to spare. Moreover for these petrol pumps most of the machines and equipments and even some of building material can be exported from the USA to India (on easy / lenient credit terms to the US small businesses, the owner of these petrol Pumps in India)
(5)- The ruling Hindutva-forces-supported-media in India have been accusing the so-called US deep state of bringing regime change in India that is why allegedly the USA wants to Christianize India hence the US establishment is allegedly opposing FCRA Legislation in India as reported at https://www.republicworld.com/opinion/the-gen-z-myth-and-the-cockroach-farce-2026-07-04-131185 and https://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/us-news/us-congressman-riley-moore-criticizes-proposed-indian-fcra-amendments-clear-attack-against-christians-101785888766105.html .
(6)- God only knows whether the said allegations of Hindutva forces are correct or not but if the USA is really interested in having considerable and physical / tangible presence in India then it can be achieved in easier and in a much better & cordial way by having US small businesses ( by way of 10, 000 petrol pumps) in India which will fill the sky of India with stars and strips all across India at the business of the USA (the petrol pumps owned by US business).
(7)- Improved Indo-US friendship will go a long way in helping the leader of the free world the USA in establishing and running the “New human rights friendly rule based global order” which is the need of entire mankind because old global order of the UN has been destroyed (mainly by Russia and China) due to Ukraine and Iran wars but new global order is necessary as inevitable globalization is impossible without a global order.
It is hoped Prez Trump will keep the basic & wider interest of the USA in mind and instead of unnecessarily damaging US Relation (by signing “The Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026”) with the constitutionally largest secular democracy of the World,India, -- would work for opening 10,000 petrol pumps by US small businesses across India where diesel and Petrol from US oil refineries would be sold and which is bound to buttress Indo-US relations
