One Day Seminar on Religious Music in Chandigarh

India: February 27, 2016. (PCP) Day National Seminar on “SECULAR AND RELIGIOUS MUSIC IN PUNJAB: GROWTH AND EVOLUTION (c.1000 to c.1849) was organized by the Department of Music and Department of History of GGSCW, Sector 26, Chandigarh. Teams from Jawwadi Taksal Ludhiana, Bhaini Sahib Ludhiana and Department of Music, Punjabi University, Patiala performed Gurmat Sangeet. In this seminar 60 Delegates from different universities and colleges, viz; Panjab University, Chandigarh, Punjabi University, Patiala, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and Raja Man Singh Tomar Music & Art University, Gwalior (M.P) presented papers on History, origin and growth of Secular and religious music in Punjab. The Chief Guest of the function was S.Gurdev Singh Brar, IAS (Retd.), President, Sikh Educational Society. Prof. Pankaj Mala Sharma, Deptt. Of Music, Panjab University, Chandigarh, was the Guest of Honour. Principal Dr. Charanjeet Kaur Sohi welcomed the guests & delegates. Prof. Sukhmani Bal Rair, Deptt. Of History, Panjab Universtiy, Chandigarh, was the Key Note Speaker of the event. In the keynote address she emphasized on the religious beliefs and patterns of Punjab during the medivial period and forms of music prevailing at that time and related them to the modern time. The Vote of Thanks was given by Col. (Retd.) Jasmer Singh Bala, Secretary, Sikh Educational Society. Pandit (Dr.) Harvinder Sharma, Former Principal Govt. Post- Graduate College, Kalka (Haryana) gave practical demonstration by playing Sitar in the valedictory Ceremony.
