Washington DC: January 24, 2017. (Reuters) Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, and an avid opponent of newly-inaugurated President Donald Trump, actually praised Trump’s decision to reinstate the Mexico City Policy.
This policy, which has been supported and then rescinded a number of times since it was originally implemented by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, prohibits foreign governments from using foreign aid money from the U.S. to perform or promote abortion.
At the end of 2016, the ERLC released six pro-life priorities for President Trump and the U.S. Congress to work toward. Although not one of those specific action steps, reinstating the Mexico City Policy is in line with the ERLC’s commitment to promote the sanctity of life and of eliminating funding for abortion through measures such as defunding Planned Parenthood.
Moore’s official statement reads as follows:“The usage of taxpayer money to fund abortions is and always has been morally repugnant, and I applaud President Trump's decision to reinstate the Mexico City Policy. This common sense policy protects conscience freedom and prevents taxpayer dollars from sponsoring abortions. Public funds should be used for protecting life and promoting human flourishing, not exploiting women and families. This decision will save lives, will encourage the hundreds of thousands of men and women who will march on Washington this week for the rights of unborn children, along with millions more around the country who believe that foreign aid should promote life, not end it. This is a welcome step in the right direction, and my hope is that the President will continue to defend human dignity and and hold the predatory abortion industry accountable."
The ERLC reports that the Mexico City Policy effectively restricts abortion providers from performing and promoting abortions.
