Sierra Leone: March 22, 2017. A pastor in the West African country of Sierra Leone has found an incredibly rare diamond and made the selfless decision to give it away.
Relevant Magazine reports that Pastor Emmanuel Momoh found the 706-carat diamond in a nearby village and decided to give it to the country’s government in hopes that the government will use it to improve the lives of all the citizens of Sierra Leone.
“I believe the government can do more, especially at a time when the country is undergoing some economic challenges,” stated Momoh.
In addition to economic challenges, the west African nation suffered from an Ebola outbreak in 2014. The country’s citizens also face the problem of unsafe drinking water.
Historically, Sierra Leone is known for its “blood diamonds,” which were mined during periods of conflict and war and sold to finance an uprising.
Ernest Bai Koroma, the nation’s president, praised Momoh’s sacrificial offer and said it was “A gift from God, and it will be a terrible thing if anyone tries to do something criminal with it.”
The diamond is valued at as high as $62 million. The largest diamond previously found was a discovered in 1972 and sold for $2.5 million.
