Hamas Begs Iran for Help to Destroy Israel, Says U.S. Envoy

Washington DC: October 25, 2017. (Laura Lacey Johnson) Jason Greenblatt, the U.S. Special Representative for International Negotiations, is putting the world on notice that Hamas is now begging Iran for help to destroy Israel. Commenting on the visit of several Hamas leaders to Tehran over the weekend, Greenblatt on Monday took to Twitter saying: “Hamas, which has only brought ruin and misery to Palestinians, now begs Iran for help and again vows to destroy Israel. 1/2” “Palestinians deserve so much better than this. We must find a better path forward toward peace and prosperity. 2/2” The visit to Tehran comes as Hamas and Fatah, rival Palestinian factions, have recently reached a deal over political reconciliation. The two groups have split rule over the Palestinian territories of Gaza and the West Bank, respectively, for nearly a decade. Fatah is committed to a peaceful, political path forward in its fight for Palestinian statehood. Founded by Yasser Arafat in 1959, Fatah is an acronym for “Palestinian National Liberation Movement.” Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas currently leads Fatah. Hamas believes violence is the path forward to claim Palestine from Israeli occupation. Hamas is an acronym (spelled backward) for “Islamic Resistance Movement.” Founded in the late 1960s, Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood. The group's official charter, adopted in 1988, calls for the destruction of Israel and raising “the banner of Allah over every inch of Palestine.” In recent days, Hamas has renewed its commitment to destroy Israel through violent means.
