Philadelphia: Dr. Nazir S Bhatti, Editor of Pakistan Christian Post and President of Pakistan Christian Congress in a letter to President New York
Honorable Mr. Jeffery Imm, speakers of this event, ladies and gentlemen. I congratulate REAL organization and its functionaries on organizing this Human Right Day celebration today.
Sir, Human Rights are rights for all people regardless of nationality, sex, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language according to Human Rights Day Declaration signed on this day of December 10, 1948, by United Nations.
Almost every country on globe writes and submits this Human Rights Day Declaration of UNO in their constitutions, but we must look at whether these rights are fully and honestly practiced by them or not.
I must draw attention of participants towards persecution of Pakistan Christian minorities remain a tragic human rights atrocity. Pakistan Christian minorities are persecuted, attacked, killed, and suffer under spurious charges of "blasphemy" by those in the Pakistan majority use under the Pakistan Penal Code.
The Hindus, Sikhs and Ahmedia Muslims are also victimized and suffer hardships in Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
In reports received and published in Pakistan Christian Post that during this Christmas season also Christians are trying to celebrate under fear and harassment by Muslims. In Larkana District which is birthplace of former Prime Ministers Late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto Christians protested on December 6, 2025, against harassment and attacks by Muslims. Larkana City is far Flung city of Sindh Province if such safety and Security issues can be reported in such city then you can imagine situation in big cities and towns.
On 5th December one Christian Pastor Kamran was gunned down in Gujranwala city in Punjab province. Pastor Kamran was attacked in Islamabad few months back and relocated himself with family to Gujranwala city but no security was provided to him by government which shows how much government cares for safety and security of Christians in Pakistan.
There are many cases of kidnap and rape of Christians women in Pakistan. After rape these poor women are converted to Islam and sold in marriages to Muslim influential people. It is ironic to note that Muslim judges not ensure justice with poor parents of Christian girls and husbands of Christian women but favor Muslim kidnappers.
Pakistan Christian minorities also suffer persecution in charges of "blasphemy" trumped-up charges to attack and persecute religious minorities under Section 295 and 295A of the Pakistan Penal Code.
In October of this year 2025, Pakistan Christian minority and pastor Zafar Bhatti was finally acquitted after 13 years in prison for alleged crime of "blasphemy." The Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi Bench acquitted Zafar Bhatti after 13 years of imprisonment in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi. He had spent 13 long, difficult years in prison, falsely accused of sending two blasphemous text messages.
But his October 2, 2025 release from prison finally came too late. On the verge of a medical examination on October 6, the 54 year old Christian minority pastor Zafar Bhatti died of a heart attack on October 5. Prison officials had known that Pastor Bhatti had medical and heart issues for years, with his heart functioning at only 15 percent.
He is yet another victim and martyr in a two class system, where the Pakistan majority views Christian minorities as second class human beings, if at all.
Young Christian minority Nabeel Masih, died at just 24 years old, in July 2025. He was charged with "blasphemy" at 16 years old - one of the youngest victims ever of the Pakistan blasphemy laws targeting Christian minorities and other religious minorities. The young man was originally sentenced falsely with the crime of "blasphemy" that could never be proven. He was released on bail in 2021 and re-arrested on new charges that same year. He was trying to be treated for lipomas, he suffered acute Hepatitis E, but in July 2025, he suffered from complications of liver failure and had ascites in his body, and he died that month.
There are more than 3,000 arrest of Christians from 1980 to 2025 under blasphemy laws in Pakistan. It must be noted by Global Community that Pakistan came into being in 1947 and up to 1973 there was no arrest of any individuals in Pakistan when 1952 and 1962 constitutions were People Of Pakistan Constitutions but when Pakistan was declared Islamic State with constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan the blasphemy laws stated as weapon against minorities.
We witness that Muslim states when turn to be Islamic Republic states then it turned to be origin of intolerance and terrorism.
I must offer a view of history of Constitution of Pakistan which was not ever stated by Founder of Pakistan Mohammad Ali Jinnah who clarified in his memorial speech of 11 August in 1947 where he told nation that Pakistan will be land of Muslims, Christians, Hindus and other religious minorities who will be very free to go to their mosques, Churches and Temples.
Due to founders stand on rights of individuals in new founded country in 1947, the first constitution of Pakistan introduced in 1952 was named as Peoples Republic of Pakistan Constitution.
When first martial law was imposed in 1958, the military dictator Field Marshal General Ayub Khan gave a new constitution in 1962 with name of Peoples Republic of Pakistan Constitution.
But unfortunately, when so-called democracy was introduced in Pakistan by Premier Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, he introduced Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan in 1973. He brought amendment in Constitution as 4th Amendment declaring Ahmadi Muslim Sect of Muslims as Minority in Pakistan with Pakistan Resolution of 1940 as Preamble of Constitution to turn into Islamic state.
In 1973 constitution the basic rights of Christians were snatched by introduction of Urban-Rural Quota of jobs instead of Quota of jobs for Christians and in higher education institutions.
In 1920, during British Colonial rule section 295 A was added in Indian Penal Code to punish persons or groups who violate religious harmony after attack on Publisher of a book about Prophet Mohammad in Lahore.
Same Indian Penal Code of blasphemy laws was turned to be Section 298 A and B and later 295 C to be Death Penalty in Pakistan Penal Code in 1073 Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan which target Christians in Pakistan.
Now Christian youth is deprived of equal opportunities in Jobs and education. Christians living in slums of major cities and towns are not moved to better housing nor a given bank loans for construction of homes while Muslims are given such opportunities and enjoying life.
I hope that Government of Pakistan will provide election opportunity for minorities that their representatives may be able to raise their voice in parliament that world may know their basic problems and issues.
After 18th Amendment in Constitution of 1973, in the year 2011, Article 50 which empowered minorities to elect their own representatives in Provincial Assemblies and National Assembly of Pakistan and Peoples Representation Act was amended and basic right snatched.
Now Muslim political parties never give party tickets to minorities but select persons of their own Choice on reserved seats in parliament who speaks voice on their masters on every forum instead of Christian rights.
We demand on this day of Human Rights that government of Pakistan may restore election rights for Christians and repeal blasphemy laws.
