Pakistani Christians and the Contemporary Two-Nation Theory. By Dr. Emanuel Adil Ghouri

Undoubtedly, the two-nation theory formed the basis of the Pakistan independence movement, but along with it, there were other economic, social, political, and religious reasons. The brief summary of the two-nation theory is that Muslims and Hindus are two separate nations whose religion, civilization, way of life, and culture are all different from each other. Therefore, by living in one region, one nation will become a minority and the other a majority. This will lead to millions of Muslims becoming slaves of Hindus, which will lead to the destruction of Muslims. Therefore, Muslims should start the struggle for a separate country where they can live according to the basic principles of Islam. It seems that according to Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, India was inhabited by only two nations, but on the contrary, this region was composed of many nations, including Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Parsis, and other nations. Like Muslims, they too were victims of oppression, injustice, religious prejudice, political and social inequality by the Hindu majority, but Hindu-Muslim riots were more severe, which led to a widening gap between Hindus and Muslims.

Even in 1924, while giving an interview to the Daily Herald London in Mumbai, Muhammad Ali Jinnah said that how can two great nations of India who cannot eat together under one roof live together? One worships a cow while the other eats beef. Similarly, Hindu extremist Sir Munim Swami does not recognize churches and mosques as places of worship, as if demolishing places of worship of other religions other than temples is part of his religion.  Similarly, the two-nation theory of 1857 is completely different from the one that was promoted by the religious leadership here after the establishment of Pakistan, according to which Hindus, Christians, Jews, Buddhists and Magians from all over the world are one nation, while all Muslims are another nation. In the past, minorities were oppressed by the majority and religion was used as a justification for this. This is the same problem faced by Pakistani minorities today. Here, the Christian leaders of the Pakistan Movement have proven wrong, who believed that Pakistan would prove to be a safe haven for Christians. Because Muslims themselves were a minority in India for a long time, during this period they have endured religious prejudice, religious oppression, religious extremism, political and social inequality. Therefore, their attitude towards their minorities will be completely different. The struggle for freedom of other Muslims involved strong cooperation from other minorities, especially Christians, which made many impossible things possible (especially the issue of the division of Punjab), but the situation turned out to be the opposite. When they came into the majority, they inflicted more atrocities on their minorities than the atrocities that were inflicted on them as a minority. Before the establishment of Pakistan, there is no such example of atrocities where minorities were killed extrajudicially in the name of blasphemy.

They are being burned alive or their bodies are being burned, hundreds of non-Muslims have been charged with blasphemy, they have been imprisoned for years, hundreds of churches have been burned, hundreds of houses have been demolished - these are historical examples we find in Pakistan. We played an important political role in liberating it from the Hindus. This is the land where Islamic slogans are written on the walls of churches and Christians are called infidels. Those who erase these words are accused of blasphemy and shot. Where attempts are made to convert a church pastor to Islam at gunpoint. When nations are crushed by oppression, when their honor, homes, places of worship, and religious beliefs are not protected, then separatist movements arise. A similar echo was heard after the Jaranwala tragedy. Previously, from 1997 to 2022, there have been 91 attacks on Christian churches and settlements, in which no accused has been punished or brought to justice, which is why it has become such a big tragedy that has shocked Christians. After this incident, if any rumor about blasphemy spreads in an area, Christian settlements become empty. People leave their homes and run to safe places to save their lives. The recent Ghausia Town, Sheikhupura, Rawalpindi, and tandeawala  incidents are fresh examples of this.

People associated with social media know that today's Christians do not feel safe in Muslim settlements, nor have Christian settlements specifically for them been safe.

The frightened Christians want free Christian countries to give them shelter, and some seem to be  wishing a separate Christian country for themselves. Seeing their helplessness and helplessness, it seems to me that a new two-nation theory is being born today.  Which is explaining why it has become difficult for Christians and extremist Muslims to live together. Christians are now seeing conditions that they did not see before the creation of Pakistan..

We, patriotic Christians, do not want the division of Mother land but seeing the depressed faces of the people, we definitely support the fact that Pakistani Christians should be given protection of life and property, given the right to be equal citizens, and the atmosphere of religious prejudice should be eliminated so that there is no need for a two-nation theory in the present era.
