Lahore: August 5m 2009. (PTI): In the second such incident within a week, violence sparked by alleged desecration of holy scriptures on Tuesday claimed two lives in Pakistan's Punjab province. The incident occurred at Sheikhupura, 35 km from here when residents attacked a factory and allegedly resorted to firing when words spread that one of its employees tore up a calendar inscribed with verses from the Quran. Two employees of the factory, Shaikh Mujeeb and Qasim were killed in the violence. Police reached the spot and dispersed rioters. "We are investigating the incident from different dimensions," Sheikhupura Superintendent of Police Muhammad Sohail said, adding that there were some reports that the violence erupted over an issue of salary of the factory workers. Meanwhile, Lahore Commissioner Khusro Pervez said a large contingent of police personnel has been deployed in Sheikhupura and the government would not allow anyone to exploit the situation. At least eight members of the minority Christian community, including three women and two children, were burnt alive and dozens of houses destroyed and ransacked during communal violence in Koriaan village, some 160 km from here, last week. The violence erupted after a group of Muslims accused some Christians of burning pages of the Quran.
