Inayat Bernard) 18th March,2013: “I am your governor and will not disappoint you.” The Governor of Punjab Makhdoom Syed Ahmed Mahmood was talking to the one day seminar held at the Governor’s House organized by Church of Pakistan Moderator Bishop of Raiwind Bishop Samuel Robert Azariah. The topic was Peace and Trust: basic ingredients for Democracy. He said to over 400 gathering composed of religious, political and social leaders coming from all denominations of Muslims and the Christians as well, “ I speak from the bottom of my heart that I welcome and join you to console to the prevailing situation which has affected the whole nation in general and the Christians in particular. He said that when he came to know about the Joseph Colony event he was saddened foe this shameful and ugly event. He said that as soon as he came to know he wrote a letter to the Chief Minister of Punjab Mian Sahhbaz Sharif that it was his duty to ensure security to the Non Muslims in this province and take appropriate measures for their rehabilitation. Secondly he was called to Karachi by the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari and showed his concern by announcing 500,000 to each affected family.
The Governor of Punjab further said that the all people of different sects and faiths are sitting under the same roof and this is Pakistan. He said today that the image of the country is shattered but if we trust on each other we can rebuild the trust among ourselves and can continue for a best democracy. He assured that he will do his best to create a harmony and understanding among the religions. He refereed to the 11th August 1947 speech of the founder of the country in which he had assured that all minorities in Pakistan will be considered equal for the constitution of and will have the livery to go their religious places of worship. He ended by saying.”I will not disappoint you and all my decisions will not be for me but in favour of the people of Pakistan and the province of Punjab”.
The host of seminar Bishop Samuel Robert Azaria congratulated the present government which completed its 5 years of democracy. He said that if all cooperate we can continue in the stable democracy. He said bluntly that the religious leaders of Muslims and Christians have built walls around themselves and if they go beyond their walls and the peace and trust can prevail and the democracy will grow in our country. Addressing to the religious leaders and the teachers he said that they need to teach the people to respect one another through their lessons and lectures from the religious places of worship.
He said that when we out our tust on each other then there will be peace and when there is peace the path to democracy will become smooth where all creatures of God will show their love and concern with each other,
The chief patron of Muslim and Christian Dialogue Abdul Qadar Shaheen said that we have reached to this stage after a long struggle by organizing programs in Pakistan and abroad. The Peace and trust take years to build and seconds to shatter. Today not only Joseph Colony is affected but the imam bargas, mosques and other places of worship are not safe. We need to rebuild the image of Pakistan that there are people who are peace loving and wish to sit together and discuss the common issues and avoid differences.
Dr. Uzair Albazi said that peace is more than fight and good relationships are a guarantee for peace and trust among ourselves. He said that political trust is ensure by the government among all citizens of the country in which mutual respect is essential. For social trust Muslims and Christians have joined fir a true Islamic Republic of Pakistan. He said that we have the power, we have the opportunity and we have the motivation. Let us therefore cooperate in future in our surroundings where the hostilities can turn on to harmonious partnership. Or relationships will bring us closer to each other.
Rev. Canon Dr. Patrick Augustine based in London said that he is on peace pilgrimage starting from Canterbury, Vatican and Assisi. He said the Muslims and Christian can bring peace and trust when they do away with the hostility and give way to peace and trust which are basis for a good democracy.
He said let the Muslims and Christian work together for peace around us and can make our region a peaceful [lace to live. He said that in Gojra burning 10 people died but thank God none died in Joseph Colony incident. I pray that all will work together. He said that Muslims are obliged to safeguard the minorities in an Islamic country. Peace can overcome hatred. He ended by reciting the prayer fo St. Francis of Assisi.
Qazi Abdul Qadeer Khamosh said that the founder of the country had such an idea to have trust in a Hindu and Jogindar Nath Mandal was the first speaker of the constituent assembly while Ahmdi Nasr-ul-Khan was the minster in his cabinet. If democracy is deemed then the peace and trust is very important. If such a situation is there then three will be no need for people like Jogindar Nath Mandal to migrate to India but they will live in this country.
He continued that the Muslim and Christians have made their hearts clear towards each other and then the trust will develop and there will be peace and it will turn into a good democracy.
Rev. Emmanuel Khokhar was the stage secretary while the reading from the Holy Quran was read by Riaz Ahmed Usman and Rev. Suleman read Ps.133 that it is so beautiful that the brothers get together at one place.
