Faisalabad: March 28, 2014. (PCP) The Association of Women for Awareness and Motivation (AWAM) in collaboration with the Rights of Expression, Association, Assembly and Thought (REAT Network) and Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP), organized a public outreach seminar entitled "Harmony for Humanity" held at Faisalabad on 12 March 2014. This activity was joined by 70 Muslim and Christian participants from different walks of life. The event aiming to sensitize the general public and youth about adopting a positive attitudinal and behavioral leading to social harmony.
Speaking on the occasion, a human rights defender, Naseem Anthony said, “Religion has a powerful language which has deepest effects on its followers. It’s a personal matter of every individual. Every one has a right to practice any religion by ones own choice.” “All religions do not allow exploiting the rights of human beings, therefore, the religious leaders must play their positive role for the survival of humanity and promotion of social harmony and peaceful co-existence,” he added.
The director of the AWAM, Nazia Sardar said, “The social injustice and discriminatory behaviors towards women are kept from beginning within families. With the passage of time, it has spread all over the society and known as social evil. Social evils like prejudice holds women back in all departments of life.” "Women have particular role to create a peaceful environment, therefore, it is a duty of all community members to promote equality and pass up the pessimistic behaviors against women,” she added.
An intellectual, Allama Zia Hussain Zia said, “Disharmony and conflicts is society exists due to hypocrisy. Social Harmony is possible only with the education, peaceful interaction among various groups, and removal of social injustice and inequality to maintain a balance in the society.” “Religion does not create conduct, but promotes ethics. The conduct springs from the nature and instinct of human beings. Faiths divide individuals further into different factions; therefore, all religions must be respected to avoid any clash between different communities,” he added.
A journalist, Jahangir Ashraf said, “The media has a significant role in educating the citizens about implications and effects of sectarian hatred, exposing human rights violations and enabling human rights protection and observance for the preservation of humanity.” “The media persons must fulfill their role of gathering information and reporting by being truthful, no matter the consequences. They must avoid publishing and broadcasting material that promotes ideas threatening social harmony and harming relations between diverse communities,” he added.
A human rights activist, Naveed Walter said, "The basic human rights including freedom of thought and belief are guaranteed in the Constitution of Pakistan, but the irony is that the practice is contrary to the human rights principles and standards. It is essential for promotion of social justice and harmony that every citizen of Pakistan enjoys the right of access to justice and opportunities without the determination of majority & minority, and influential & powerless.”
