The Hidden Suffering of Christian Women in Pakistan: Forced Conversion and Domestic Violence. Report by Sardar Mushtaq Gill

Lahore, Pakistan: In Pakistan, Christian women are increasingly subjected to forced conversions to Islam and coerced marriages with Muslim men, often leading to abuse and social alienation. The case of Shahida Bibi, a Christian woman who endured forced conversion, marriage, and years of abuse, highlights the painful realities faced by many in similar situations.

Reports say that at just 11 years old, Shahida’s mother abandoned her to marry a Muslim man, leaving Shahida in the care of her new husband’s brother. This abandonment marked the start of years of suffering, as she was isolated from her father and mistreated by a stranger. At 18, she was forcibly married to this man’s brother, pressured to convert to Islam, and subjected to 13 years of physical and emotional abuse. Eventually, Shahida escaped and returned to her father’s home with her child. Unfortunately, her story is far from unique.

Across Pakistan, many Christian women face similar fates. Vulnerable and often impoverished, they are lured into marriages with Muslim men, only to experience abuse, rejection, and isolation. Some are pressured to convert to Islam by their families, who believe such unions may provide a more stable life. However, the reality within Muslim households—marked by cultural and religious divides—is often far from the prosperity they were promised.

The issue extends beyond individual cases like Shahida’s and reflects a broader systemic problem. Christian women in Pakistan are frequently coerced into forced conversions and face social marginalization. According to human rights organizations such as LEAD Ministries Pakistan, these conversions are not always voluntary but the result of familial, social, and economic pressures. These women often struggle to reconcile their Christian faith with the Muslim-majority society, leaving them alienated from both their Christian communities and the families they marry into.

The consequences of forced conversions extend beyond immediate trauma. Many women become trapped in cycles of abuse, discrimination, and isolation. Once converted, they are often shunned by their Christian families, who view their conversion as a betrayal of their faith. Within their Muslim families, they frequently face hostility or rejection. This clash of cultures and religions leaves many women with no place to turn, caught between two worlds that refuse to accept them.

Despite growing concerns and the efforts of advocacy groups, the Pakistani government has yet to implement adequate legal protections to prevent these abuses. Religious discrimination and forced conversions remain widespread, leaving minority women vulnerable to violence and exploitation. The lack of legal reforms and societal will to address these issues deepens the suffering of Christian women, who continue to endure in silence.

The forced conversion of Christian women raises serious questions about religious freedom, women's rights, and the need for societal reform. Shahida Bibi’s case, like many others, is a stark reminder of the challenges these women face. Reports indicate that many suffer for years in abusive marriages, disguised as religious conversions, and are forced into isolation. Human rights organizations and activists have long called for an end to this systemic abuse. The stories of these women underscore the urgent need for legal reforms and international pressure to protect religious minorities in Pakistan from coercion, violence, and discrimination.

The plight of Christian women in Pakistan highlights the need for greater advocacy and protection of minority rights. As international organizations and local activists call for justice, there is hope that efforts to end forced conversions, religious persecution, and abuse will eventually lead to a safer and more just society for all citizens, regardless of their faith. Until then, the struggle for these women’s freedom and dignity continues.
