Lahore: A  disturbing incident unfolded at the Lahore Sessions Court when an assassination attempt targeting a blasphemy accused was narrowly avoided. The suspect, identified as Atif, son of Shaukat Ali and a resident of Baloki Kahna, was apprehended during a routine security check at the court's Judge Gate. Upon inspection, a loaded pistol was found in his possession, which discharged unexpectedly. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Atif, who was under surveillance, had reportedly come to the court with the intention of killing Mudassar, the accused in case number 664/24 under Section 295-C of the blasphemy law. Mudassar, currently held at the Kahna Police Station, has been charged with blasphemy—a crime that has sparked intense debate and unrest across the country. Authorities later discovered additional weapons on Atif, including two homemade pistols, a knife, and four live rounds, further intensifying the gravity of the situation.

The authorities responded swiftly, ensuring that security at the courthouse was heightened following the alarming incident. Law enforcement agencies have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the full extent of the plot and identify any other individuals involved in orchestrating the assassination attempt.

In a statement issued shortly after the thwarted attack, Pastor Imran Amanat, leader of LEAD Ministries Pakistan, expressed relief that the situation did not escalate further. "We thank God that no one was killed today," Pastor Amanat said. "This incident is a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by those accused under the blasphemy law. We urge the authorities to provide immediate and enhanced security for those accused of blasphemy, especially those who have been released on bail or acquitted of charges."

Sardar Mushtaq Gill, Founder of LEAD Ministries Pakistan, said, "In blasphemy cases, when Christians are accused, the entire Christian community suffers from attacks by Islamist hardliners. This is a pattern that must be addressed, as it places not only the accused but the broader community in grave danger."

Pastor Amanat also emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the group behind the attack. "The individuals behind this attack must be traced and brought to justice. Their motives are clear—yet another attempt to silence and intimidate those accused of blasphemy. The law must act swiftly and decisively to ensure such incidents do not happen again," he added.

The incident has ignited widespread concern over the safety of individuals involved in blasphemy cases, with many calling for stronger measures to protect those under threat. The government, already under scrutiny for its handling of blasphemy-related violence, now faces increased pressure to guarantee the safety of both accused individuals and those advocating for their protection.

As investigations continue, authorities remain on high alert, determined to prevent further acts of violence tied to the contentious and often volatile blasphemy law.
