A Christian in Crisis: Hepatitis, Blasphemy Court Delays, and a Broken System. Report by Juliet Chowdhry
Kasur, Punjab: Nabeel Masih, a 24-year-old Christian from Phoolnagar, District Kasur, continues to face unimaginable challenges in Pakistan – a nation where religious minorities too often suffer injustice. First arrested in 2016 at the age of just 16 after a false accusation of blasphemy, Nabeel endured five long years in Kasur District Jail without conviction. He was finally released on bail in March 2021 thanks to the legal and humanitarian intervention of the British Asian Christian Association (BACA).
Since his release, Nabeel has had to rebuild his life, all while suffering from both mental and physical after effects of his wrongful incarceration. With BACA’s help, he has undergone two separate surgeries to remove painful lipomas—once in May 2021 and again in March 2025. Our charity has provided Nabeel with a safe house, covers his utility bills, and supports all his medical care and security needs.
Nabeel Masih waits on his hospital bed, thanking God before life-changing surgery.
A Life-Threatening Illness Strikes
In June 2025, Nabeel reached out to BACA after experiencing worsening symptoms: extreme fatigue, yellowing of his eyes, and nausea. Alarmed, our operations manager swiftly arranged for his transfer to Hamid Latif Hospital in Lahore, a trusted private facility. Dr. Inam Ullah Saleem carried out urgent tests, including an abdominal ultrasound and Liver Function Test (LFT).
The results were harrowing. Nabeel’s bilirubin level was a dangerously high 37.37 mg/dL—well above the normal 0.30 to 1.20 mg/dL range. Additional results revealed severe liver inflammation, and he was diagnosed with acute Hepatitis E. Enzyme levels (SGPT and SGOT), which indicate liver cell damage, were also alarmingly elevated.
Thanks to timely intervention, Nabeel was prescribed appropriate medication and began his road to recovery under the close supervision of BACA.
Signs of Improvement Bring Hope
On 28th June, after 10 days of treatment, the BACA team returned to Hamid Latif Hospital for Nabeel’s follow-up. His new LFT report, conducted at Ittefaq Hospital, showed signs of improvement. His bilirubin levels had dropped from 37.37 to 28.6 mg/dL—a clear indication that his body was beginning to recover.
Dr. Saleem was cautiously optimistic, recommending that Nabeel remain on medication until his bilirubin levels return to normal.
“I am thankful to BACA donors for standing with me financially and morally,” said Nabeel. “Without BACA’s help, life could have been difficult for me. My family cannot afford my treatment and other expenses.”
Legal Limbo: A Decade of Injustice
While recovering from a serious illness, Nabeel is still being forced to fight a long, drawn-out legal battle. On 26th April, BACA escorted Nabeel to court for a hearing regarding the 2016 First Information Report (FIR) lodged by police. After a long wait, a police officer finally submitted a written statement. The absence of the complainant’s counsel—due to a lawyers’ strike—delayed proceedings yet again. The next hearing was scheduled for 10th May.
But on 10th May, the pattern of neglect repeated itself: the investigation officer failed to appear, prompting the judge to reschedule for 24th May. At that hearing, BACA’s solicitor Naseeb Anjum posed key questions to the police officer under cross-examination, exposing the fragility of the prosecution’s case:
Why has the full police file not been submitted?
Why did a police officer act as the complainant?
Why was an FIR registered despite a Home Department statement that no case should be filed?
Why has no forensic analysis of Nabeel’s phone or SIM been conducted?
The officer had no answers. Naseeb Anjum argued that the case lacked legal merit and should be dismissed immediately.
Despite these glaring failures, the delays persisted. On 14th June, a scheduled hearing was missed because the judge was on leave. The next hearing, on 28th June, was also fruitless as the complainant, their solicitor, and key police witnesses all failed to appear. The court has now set 5th August as the new hearing date.
“I am not satisfied with the trial court,” Nabeel confided. “I spent five years in jail, and now five more attending court. I have suffered mentally and physically for this unjust delay.”
Outside the courthouse, Nabeel Masih stands beside his solicitor, Naseeb Anjum — a powerful symbol of hope, resilience, and the fight for justice.
How You Can Help
BACA has stood by Nabeel from the beginning—providing legal support, housing, and medical care. But we can’t do it alone.
We urge the international community to:
Pray for Nabeel’s full recovery and his acquittal.
Raise awareness of his case to bring international pressure for justice.
Donate to support BACA’s continued work defending persecuted Christians in Pakistan.
“Nabeel’s courage and endurance are a testament to faith under fire. We remain committed to standing with him until justice is served—and we need your help to make that possible.”Nabeel’s story is one of unimaginable suffering, but also of extraordinary courage. Despite everything he has endured, he continues to inspire us all with his strength and hope. At the British Asian Christian Association, we remain committed to standing beside Nabeel as he rebuilds his life — and we are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported him on this journey. Together, we can ensure that his voice is heard and that justice is not just a hope, but a reality.”
