Nabeel Masih’s Hepatitis E Recovery Stalled by Dangerous Ascites. Report by Juliet Chowdhry and Hannah Chowdhry
Pakistan: Nabeel Masih, arrested for blasphemy at 16 on 18th September 2016, was imprisoned for 4 years. He is currently on bail, seeking acquittal due to a lack of corroborating evidence.
In June, we shared the harrowing story of Nabeel Masih, a young Christian man in Pakistan who has already endured unimaginable suffering. At just 16 years old, Nabeel was falsely accused of blasphemy in 2016 and became the youngest person ever charged under Pakistan’s notorious blasphemy laws. He spent over four years in prison under brutal conditions before his release—physically and emotionally scarred, yet determined to rebuild his life.
Recently, Nabeel was diagnosed with Hepatitis E, a dangerous virus that severely compromised his liver. After weeks of medication and signs of slight improvement, we were hopeful. However, on 19th July, Nabeel’s condition took a devastating turn for the worse.
His father, Amanat Masih, made an urgent call to our BACA team:
“Nabeel needs immediate medical help. We are poor and cannot afford his medical treatment. Please save Nabeel. He is leaving us.”
Our team acted quickly, transporting Nabeel to Indus Hospital for emergency treatment. From there, doctors referred him to a trusted private medical facility, where he was admitted in a semi-conscious, critical state. Tests revealed that Hepatitis E had caused near-total liver failure, placing Nabeel’s life in grave danger.
Just a day later, on 20th July, Nabeel’s health declined even further. He lost full consciousness, could no longer walk to the washroom, and showed no response to stimuli. Doctors recommended immediate transfer to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), warning that any delay could be fatal.
“Nabeel is lying motionless. The doctors say he must be moved to the ICU now,” his brother Maqsood Masih told us.
The BACA team worked around the clock to facilitate this life-saving intervention. It was a terrifying moment when doctors called Amanat for his thumbprint consent in the event of a fatal outcome—a conversation no parent should ever have to face.
Thankfully, with the tireless prayers of supporters in Pakistan and across the globe, Nabeel began to show signs of recovery. After six days in the ICU, he regained consciousness and has since been moved to a general ward. He can now walk, eat, and drink on his own—progress we are deeply thankful for.
Doctors have now diagnosed Nabeel with ascites—a serious medical complication in which fluid accumulates in the abdomen due to liver damage, particularly cirrhosis. This condition is dangerous to manage. Doctors have explained that removing the fluid via needle could result in excessive internal bleeding and a sudden drop in blood pressure.
To stabilise his condition, Nabeel is being given white blood cell infusions and urgently needs three doses of Albumin 20% Injection—each costing Rs.35,000 (£100). These treatments are essential to manage his fluid retention and prevent further complications, but they are well beyond the financial means of his impoverished family.
“My son has already suffered so much. I did not sleep for days. I just kept praying,” Amanat told us.
“We are so thankful to God and to BACA’s donors. Without your help, we would have lost Nabeel.”
How You Can Help
Nabeel’s fight for life is not over. He still requires:
Costly medication and nutritional supplements
Monitoring and specialised treatment to manage ascites
Continued care in a private facility where his life can be properly safeguarded
Please continue to pray for Nabeel’s complete recovery.
If you can, please give generously to support his ongoing treatment. Every contribution helps keep him alive.

Together, your prayers and gifts saved Nabeel once. With your continued compassion, we can carry him through this next critical phase of his recovery.
“Nabeel’s story is not just about one young man’s suffering—it’s a reflection of the wider injustices faced by religious minorities in Pakistan. After surviving a wrongful blasphemy conviction as a teenager, Nabeel was released into a society that still treats him as an outsider. Now, gravely ill and without access to affordable healthcare, he once again depends on the compassion of strangers. His life matters, and how we respond says everything about our shared humanity.”
